Panaji, Aug 14: Goa Bench of Bombay High Court stayed the chargesheet filed against Board of Cricket control of India (BCC) vice-president and Goa Cricket Association president Dayanand Narvekar and two other officials on Thursday August 14.
Narvekar, who was the law minister in Digamber Kamat cabinet, along with eight others, was charge-sheeted by lower court in the fake ticket scam reported during 2001 India-Australia one-day international (ODI) match.
The chargesheet had proved costly for Narvekar's political career as he had to resign from Kamat-led cabinet to pave way for United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) legislator Atanasio Monserratte.
The High Court in its interim order has stayed the chargesheet till further orders.
Narvekar along with two other Goa Cricket Association office-bearers – Eknath Naik and Vinod Fadke, had prayed before the High Court that there is no prima facie evidence against them in the ticket forgery.
The lower court had charged Narvekar, along with eight others under various sections dealing with cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery, for the purpose of cheating, and causing disappearance of evidence.
The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao (south Goa) Pooja Kavlekar had framed the charges in the infamous case which had rocked the state during an India-Australia ODI played on April 06, 2001 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda in south Goa.
The match had witnessed chaos outside the stadium when fake tickets were reported and eligible ticket holders were not allowed to watch the game.
Following ruckus at the gates, the police had resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
