- Marks ratio at PG-level to be altered to 70:30
- Special committee to prepare new draft regulations
- The move aims at bringing uniformity in marks ratio
Mangalore, Aug 20: The Academic Council of Mangalore University on Tuesday resolved to increase the internal assessment marks for post-graduate courses by 10 marks. This applies to autonomous colleges also.
As per the decision of the council, the internal assessment marks will be increased from 20 marks to 30 in each subject of 100 marks. Consequently, the marks for external assessment through regular examinations comes down from 80 to 70 a subject. The ratio will be changed from 20:80 to 30:70, henceforth.
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the council at Mangalagangotri, chaired by the university’s Vice-Chancellor K.M. Kaveriappa.
Prof. Kaveriappa told The Hindu that it was decided to constitute a committee of deans of various faculties to draft the regulations to this effect.
The committee members could hear the views of principals of autonomous and non-autonomous colleges offering post-graduate courses before finalising the draft regulations, he said. The Vice-Chancellor said that the draft regulations would be sent to the Government for approval. “Unless approved by the Government, it will not be possible to implement the decision from this academic year. It can be implemented from 2009-10,” he said.
He said that the decision taken on Tuesday would bring in uniformity in internal and external marks of post-graduate courses. At present, the Master of Business Administration course has 25 marks for internal assessment 75 for external assessment.
Principals of autonomous colleges had been urging the university to implement a 50:50 ratio for internal and external assessment for post-graduate courses. The council members felt that the university could have uniformity in regulating the ratio of marks, Prof. Kaveriappa said.
At present, there are five autonomous colleges under Mangalore University. Of them, four have been offering post-graduate courses. The other college has deferred its proposal to introduce post-graduate course from this year. In addition, the F.M.K.M. Cariappa College, owned by the university at Madikeri, also offers post-graduate courses.
