Australian DJ jailed for headbutting former PM

Canberra, Apr 9 (IANS): An Australian court on Monday sentenced a DJ to jail for at least two months for headbutting former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Astro Labe, 38, was sentenced in Hobart Magistrates Court over the headline-drawing attack on September 21, 2017, reports the Guardian.

Magistrate Michael Daly described the headbutt as unprovoked, opportunistic and cowardly deception.

The court heard Labe was drinking at a Hobart pub when he saw Abbott walk past.

Labe followed the former leader and asked to shake his hand, before grabbing it and headbutting him, saying: "You f**king deserved it".

The musician was sentenced to a maximum six-month jail term, although he will be eligible for parole after two months with the requirement that he does not commit an offence for two years.

Daly also ordered Labe to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation, the Guardian reported.

Abbott said that at the time he was left shocked and with a fat lip, and claimed the attack was linked to the same-sex marriage debate.

Labe denied that the headbutt had anything to do with marriage equality.
