Panaji, Aug 29: Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), as a part of its centenary celebrations, has decided to institute an award in memory of the late Umesh Mhambre in collaboration with the Goa Union of Journalists, which is also celebrating its Ruby Jubilee this year.
"The late Umesh Mhambre, a former senior reporter of Navhind Times daily, was a journalist with "Constructive Journalism," as his goals, balanced news coverage and positive outlook and shall always be remembered by the industry and all the readers of Navhind Times," said Suhasini Prabhugaonkar, president of Goa Union of Journalists.
"To cherish his memories and encourage journalist fraternity to contribute to their profession in a better way, this award is being istituted," stated air cmde P K Pinto, managing director of GCCI.
The award will be presented on September 18, which happens to be the second death anniversary of the late Umesh Mhambre.
"This award is for the write-up, feature or analytical writing on the subject of the "Goan industrial scenario," published during the period from first January 2007 to 31st December 2007 in newspapers across the country," said Prabhugaokar.
"A positive outlook is a must and the industries need not merely mean small or large industries but will also include tourism, infotech, biotech, mining, real estate, agro, entertainment, and other industries," she added.
"The award will be in the form of cash, trophy, and certificate and the journalists should be professional working journalists, with an experience of at least five years in the field", the president stated.
"This award is not only for Goan journalists, but also for the correspondents who represent non-Goan media channels and newspapers", Suhasini said, while briefing reporters about the programme.
Managing director of GCCI disclosed that in the years to come, photo journalism and the electronic media will also be included in the awards category and there will also be an exhibition of journalistic works of the late Umesh Mhambre.
