Udupi, Sep 5: The post of the district superintendent of police (SP) here, which remained vacant for more than two months, has been filled. IPS officer Pravin Pawar Madhukar took over charge as the new SP on Thursday September 4.

Dakshina Kannada additional SP R Dileep, who was in-charge of the post, handed over charge to Pawar and wished him success during his tenure here. Senior police officials of the district were present on the occasion.

Pravin Pawar, a native of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra state, completed his education in Mumbai. He secured his engineering degree from Mumbai University and became IPS officer in 2003. After training, he had worked in probationary capacity in Mangalore, before working in Chikmagalur district as assistant SP. He was posted as in-charge SP of Koppal district in 2007. He has now taken over charge as the fulltime SP of Udupi district.

Speaking to reporters later, Pawar said that he had no hesitation in accepting this posting. He said, he is aware of the presence of naxal menace in the district and felt, development of hamlets located deep within the forests will solve this problem. At the same time, the intelligence wing needs to function in a more affective way.  He would be happy to be associated and working with people of the district, most of whom are literate, he revealed. He also expressed his happiness to function in the home district of the state home minister. The police blog will see lot of improvements within a few days, he promised.

As regards his previous assignment, Pawar said that a considerable percentage of population in Koppal district was illiterate and the people there used to settle most of the problems through conciliation. Hence, crime rate was considerably less. "But, I got lots of experience working there," he said.

He called upon the people not to hesitate to directly contact him in case of any problems, instead of choosing indirect methods or writing to newspapers. He assured that he will try to solve their problems honestly.

To a question as to who among the two contenders are the real deputy SP of the district, Pawar said that the Inspector General of Police, Western Range, will settle the issue within a couple of days.

Mr. Madhukar, we welcome you to Udupi the famous temple town of Lord Krishna. As you have rightly said literacy in this temple town is quite high, and people of all religion lived harmoniously for many years. We all shared our delicacies during all our festivals of all faith. Though I am a Christian, I used to join my hindu friends in celebrating Janmashtami and Deepavali .

Even my hindu friends used to join me in all Christian festivals. For the last few years this oneness is missing. Some people are trying to disturb the peace and tranquility of this beautiful town. Only you can create an atmosphere of oneness among the people and bring glory to this place. May the Almighty bless you in creating a harmonious Udupi.
