PM supports media freedom for stronger democracy

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed unwavering support to media freedom, saying a free press makes a stronger democracy and makes the society more vibrant.

"A free press makes a stronger democracy. Today, on World Press Freedom Day, let us reaffirm our commitment towards steadfastly supporting a free press. It is the multiplicity of ideas and human expression that makes us more vibrant as a society," Modi tweeted.

"I applaud all those who have been working tirelessly to uphold freedom of the press. It is due to these countless women and men that the spirit of a free press is significantly enhanced."

Modi also appreciated the role of people on social media towards safeguarding the freedom of press and expression.

The UN General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press.

Interestingly, Modi only dislikes the free media. More so, a few cheerleader channels, described by former BJP leader Arun Shourie as “North Korean channels”, who devote all their time to attacking and holding the opposition to account, as well as propaganda websites which have come up under Modi’s regime, are flourishing directly and are even indirectly funded by the BJP.
Unlike Modi, who is an elected prime minister, Singh was a nominated prime minister. But Singh did not shy away from press briefings. He held at least two each year and regularly spoke to the media aboard his flight during foreign trips.
Modi used to mockingly call his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh “Maun Mohan Singh”, but he has beaten Singh in his bid to take away the meta-institutional respectability of a free press.
Then why did the PM terrified of holding even a single press conference in neutral avenue on his own government policies represented by International and national unbiased journalists?

With barely 14 months left for his term to end, he has not felt the need to hold himself and his government accountable to a free press. How fundamental this is for a real democracy is evident in the fact that even US President Donald Trump, with his permanent fulminations against “fake news” and a press he perceives as irremediably hostile, has held regular press conferences and continued the well-established practice of the White House spokesman holding nearly daily briefings for accredited correspondents?
Is free press 'Mute' the Modi or Modi 'Mute' press freedom?
Is pro BJP News 18 anchor behaviour is the the media freedom for stronger democracy?

After gagging the Press, talking about freedom of the Press is a cruel Joke. The Press are the watchdos of Democracy but what we witness on TV channels is doctored news. There is no freedom of press in our country.

What press freedom are you talking about Sir? You have destroyed the ethics of journalism in India by buying them. Just switch on the Republic TV or the Zee TV and you will understand what I mean. These channels are puppets in your hands and show and talk only what you want and not what ought to be shown.
