Mangaluru: 2,700 personnel deployed for elections, liquor ban from May 10 to 12

Mangaluru, May 8: Police commissioner Vipul Kumar on Tuesday May 8 gave details of security arrangements in the city for the assembly elections to be held on May 12.

Addressing a press meet here, he said the Mangaluru city limits has four Legislative Assembly constituencies and 877 booths. Mangaluru South has 238 booths, Mangluru North 245 booths, Mangaluru (Ullal) 173 booths (37 belonging to Bantwal taluk) and Moodbidri has 221 booths.

Among the 877 booths, 201 are critical booths and the rest normal, he said.

"A total of 26 checkposts are functioning, out of which 6 are inter-state bordr checkposts. There are 14 flying squads and 12 state surveillance teams on duty in the city," he said.

"Around 2,700 personnel and officers (CAPF, civil police, armed police and home guards) have been deployed for the election bundobust duties.

"As many as 11 companies of central armed police force (CAPF) have been deployed in the four constituencies," he said.

In view of maintaining law and order, 2,756 rowdy-sheeters and 90 potential trouble-makers are under surveillance. The police have conducted 206 route marches across the city.

Vipul Kumar also said that 1,908 weapons have been deposited by gun licence holders.

"We have booked 753 security related cases in the wake of the elections. There were two cases of illicit liquor raids and one case of illegal arms raid. Four detenues were booked under Goonda Act and six externment orders have been passed against trouble mongers," he said.

"Thirteen criminial cases have been booked after the election code of conduct came into force. These include 8 cases of seizures by flying squads and police teams. The seized items include Rs 3 lac in cash, flex, BJP party shawls, sound box DVD player and a car. Five cases were booked for violation of model code of conduct and under Representation of People Act."


Ban orders

With polling on May 12, the district administration has issued orders banning liqour (dry days) from 6 pm on May 10 to 6 pm on May 12.

Section 144 will be in place across Dakshina Kannada district from 6 pm on May 10 to 6 PM on May 13.

On voting day, ban orders under Section 144 (1) CrPC (fairs, festivals, animal markets etc) will be enforced at Bikarnakatte-Kaikamba weekly market and Karnad weekly market under Mulky panchayat limits.

    Election are still 4 more days away that is on 12th. Winners will be known only on 15th. For me the only winner is Election Commission. They deserve a standing ovation for ensuring that no defacing of Wall, unnecessary bunts and flex have been totally eliminated in this election. Public have been spared of unnecessary loud speaker sound and total peace and harmony has been maintained.
