Mangaluru/Udupi, May 12: Voting got delayed at several polling stations across the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts due to malfunctioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

In Dakshina Kannada, 24 control units, 21 ballot units and 42 VVPATs were found faulty. Technicians attended to the complaints as soon as they were informed, officials said.

In some of the polling stations, voters took the officials to task after waiting in long queues. There was a hold-up for at least 15 minutes at Capitanio school after EVM malfunctioned. The voters who were standing in a long queue were agitated. Mangaluru South Congress candidate J R Lobo visited the spot and reviewed the problem, urging the officials to fix the issue without delay.

EVMs were not functioning at three polling stations at Bengre. At Pavoor Badriya Nagar polling station, alternative voting arrangement was made by dividing the voters' list. This created confusion among voters who were unaware of the last minute arrangement. In Vagga of Bantwal taluk, as many as four EVMs malfunctioned, causing delay in voting till 11 am.

Malfunctioning of EVM reported in many booths from Udupi also. In a pink booth at Udupi Christian School, several voters were made to vote as the EVM was being fixed. A similar situation was reported at Kukkikatte school too, where there was a verbal clash and police had to intervene, and polling resumed only after the EVMs were replaced. In Uppinangady, voters reportedly returned home after voting for long for the EVM to be repaired. Sources said that the EVMs malfunctioned due to presence of moisture following overnight rains. In Sullia, voters had to wait as polling began late due to faulty EVM.

Many voters complained that the staff who were appointed in polling booths were poor in technical knowledge of EVMs. In some booths the officials struggled to put the EVMs in place, which also delayed the start.

In some of the booths, CCTV cameras were not working. In Moodubettu there was no electricity and voters complained that the they could not read the VVPAT units.

Poll officials however brushed aside the matter saying it was a common phenomenon during elections and that the malfunctioning EVMs were replaced immediately.

The staff who are responsible to man the booths should know their job. In a booth in Falnir, Mangalore we had to wait for 20 minutes for the officials to allow voters to start voting. The booth was crowded since voters had come even before 6:30 am. The staff have to be trained well and looks like they should also have some exams to qualify.

Faulty EVM, voters returned back without exercising their franchise. ..! Reason is very simple. ..faulty machine. .! Blame on machine. There could be so many technical faults/ unfavourable conditions. Effect : People have to return back without voting / have to waste their time. For than nobody is answerable. Why no alternative done ?
Suppose if you fail to pay your taxes on due date ,department will recover penalty and interest. It's clearly mentioned in provisions of concerned acts.
Post note ban inconvenience till today's EVM failure , we have seen lots of failures, but general public was not compensated. What an attitude sir ji?

Technical fault is common in machines. If we check the percentage of faulty machines, the comments may be different. Anyhow, we have to appreciate people, who have worked hard for free and fair election, including all polling staff and police force.

I am surprised that Country like india known for stringent tax regulations and Which shows absolutely no compromise in Revenue it generates from its citizens cant afford to Error free EVM.

I am rather getting suspicious of their mal functioning for the Day it was specifically prepared to be used ..

Can they be so reckless? Really can I take it face value..

Or is it a result of a different objective they wanted to achieve and in midst EVM s malfunctioned.

    Whats the election comissioner doing?

It become new trend in India EVM's become faulty in between the voting session. No one even know what happens to the votes already casted by the voters.
    1. Is replacement unit is passed checked?
    2. How many times is the replacement unit is verified before put in to service?
    3. Why every elections so many machines go faulty after the voters started voting?
    4. What is the action on faulty machine for Election Commision of India?
    5. Is manufacturer consulted for the rectification?
    6. If there are no problem with source code installed in the microchip installed on Indian EVM, why this problem is recurring?
    7. Does Election Commision of India has the statistics on faulty machine since 2014 PM Modi's government came to power?
    8. Does Election Commission of India has the serial numbers of those machine went faulty?
    9. How many times the same machine went faulty?
    10. When was the last time these machine went for servicing?
India's democratic process is under great threat. If Election Commission of India don't have answer for the above questions our democracy considered doomed.
This is the reason most of the countries in the west have dumped the 'Electronic Machine' and opted for 'Ballot Box'
    Jai Karnataka
