All courses should be taught in Indian languages, says Venkaiah Naidu

Bhopal, May 17 (PTI): Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said that all courses, even medicine and engineering, should be taught in Indian languages.

"As the Vice President of India and being a citizen, I feel that all the courses, medicine, engineering...should be taught in Hindi and all (other) Indian languages in coming days," Naidu at a journalism school in Bhopal.

Will and change of mindset were needed to effect this change, he said.

"It is easy to speak out your heart in one's own language. I am not averse to learning English, English should be learnt. But before that, our mother tongue - be it Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi or Marathi, should be learnt," he said.

If mother tongue is eyes, languages are pairs of spectacles. Spectacles are worn over eyes, but in the absence of eyes, there is no sight, Naidu said.

To establish their language here, the British made its study a must for getting jobs, he said.

If teaching and learning in Indian languages is not promoted, future generations won't be able to speak their mother tongues, the vice president said.

Naidu also touched upon disruptions in legislatures.

"The House is for debate and discussion. If it does not run, democracy would weaken....To speak against (government) is the right in democracy, but to stall the House is wrong," he said.

In selecting leaders, four 'C's should be considered -- character, calibre, capacity and conduct, he said.

However, in today's politics, another four 'C's -- caste, community, cash and criminality -- are encouraged, he lamented.

You are 100% correct but it applies only when you create 100% job availability in their own state. Only then not even a single Indian will go out of India or out of their own state seeking bread.
By the way why all politicians go outside India for treatment and send their children abroad for studies? instead improve standard of Government hospitals, schools and colleges, supervise so that corruption is minimized. I want to earn bread in my own house (country) and not in other peoples house.

The basic problem today is not the language. The government funding for education has gone down .And private sector is taking over. Although it is good ,but the exorbitant fees charged by these institutes are non affordable to middle class and before middle class people. I studied in a government funded Kannada school till 10th Standard and achieved what I am today because of this. Today same school has 50 -100 students from 1- 10 standard. There were 20 sections in the school .Today even keeping 10 sections is difficult. Apart from this the Student: Teacher ratio is low , so government is not permitting more teachers. Whereas the private schools are not interested in state language or state schools. Now to overcome all the hassles with state government and medium of instruction schools are changing over to CBSE or ICSE where English is the medium. Even students do not want to go to state board English mediums schools as they have to learn the local language. So who is to blame for this .Can the government fund the local schools or ban CBSE/ICSE schools. The problem is not language today . Many of the poor students will not be able to afford higher education and it will be a disaster to the country. No government state or center has consider this as imporatant as private institutions funded by politicians are involved in this

Vidisha is right. Four of Disagree came, must have all from people abroad. You people cheer Modi when he came to see you but are unwilling to oppose when things like this happen in India. Despite the fact that without English you people would not have landed a job outside India.

Hypocrisy is displayed at the highest.

Either forget about politics in India and don't entertain politicians in the country you reside or, raise voice when draconian rules are implied in your mother country. Do not let the misery happen to those whom you left behind.

To keep the nation United we should never impose Hindi forcefully. This very mentality by Pakistanis led to creation of Bangladesh. There it was Urdu which was being forcefully imposed.
Learning of Hindi should be through promotion and not forceful imposition.
