Mangaluru: Mayor blames Highway Authority officials for water-logging in some areas

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Jun 1: Mayor Bhaskar Moily blamed National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials for negligence in their work which resulted in water flooding the city during the recent rains.

He was addressing a press meet in city on Friday, June 1.

“NHAI officials need to be blamed for their negligence in their work at Kottara Chowki and Padil which resulted in heavy flooding in these areas. NHAI officials are not responding to our complaints and they are out of reach,” he added.

“MCC needs to coordinate and sort out the reasons for the bad work and its impact during work. Deputy Commissioner has formed a committee led by MUDA commissioner. Survey is under process and report will be submitted soon,” he said.

"The torrential rains that lashed out in city damaged 34 houses and caused loss to the tune of Rs 41.38 lac within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits,” he informed.

"Mangaluru city had recorded 215 mm of rainfall which resulted in water. Prior to the rain, we had cleaned all the drainages, removed the wastage, so that water could flow smoothly. But due to continuous rainfall, waste materials got struck in the drainage and they was no way out for the water to flow which resulted water logging in the city,” he said.

"As per the direction of Deputy Commissioner, MCC officials swung in to action to rescue people. We received extraordinary support from the local people, police department, fire service, revenue and forest department. We tried our best to bring the situation under control. The water could not join the river and there was reverse flow due to high tide,” he added.

"Our team was continuously at work carrying out rescue operations and we officials were monitoring the situations from our control room. I have directed concerned officials to distribute necessary compensation for the damage,” he concluded.

Deputy mayor Mohammed, chief whip of MCC Shashidhar Hegde, corporators Naveen D’Souza, Praveen Chandra Alva and others were present.

Don't blame nature for the poor work of the officials. If you have water logged in your houses for upto 2 feet then you would understand the problem and then talk . None of the GOVT reps came to visit or lend an helping hand and who is going to pay the damages ? everyone just talks and no actions.

First of all, Why have the authorities allowed a highway to pass through a city. When smaller towns like Saklespur, Gadag etc. can lobby and get bypass roads, why in Mangalore , people insist on flyover, underpass etc. on a highway .Instead if they insist on not letting this highway pass through the city and insist on speeding up the work on the bypass roads declared by the Highways ministry , Mangalore corporation can get hold of these roads and develop and provide amenities to the locals instead of always blaming NHAI for all problems.
The NHAI has just converted the city roads into Highways without providing any alternatives. And they are not bothered about local amenities like footpaths, Pedestrian crossings, overbridges, street lights, signals etc. because this is not their work.

Blame game should be stopped.Instead go around the city with the conerned authorities and engineers of Mangalore City Corporation, find out the encroachment by the builders, businessmen and others and take the JCBs and knock down immediately. You people cant do this because your officers and engineers are corrupt, they are bribed by the builders and the businessmen. Highway autority comes under Central Govt. But where is our great MP Nalin Kumar Kateel? People of Mangalore are facing hard times and MP Nalin Kumar gives poses to the media and boasts himself about Shiradi Ghat.Rubbish. First come here and visit Pumpwell Circle calamities. Since 7 years the flyover work is going on.Did you ever visit the site and take the action against the Highway Engineers and the Contractor? No, you wont do that.Instead you and your BJP people start blaming ex MLA and the local Corporator. Shame on you people, We regret for electing leaders like you. Yesterday hundreds of men and women came out in the street against the highway engineers,Where were you? Present MLA came to the site and started blaming former MLA and the local Corporator. So also some Bajrang Dal/VHP people came to the site to blame Congress and support Vedavyas Kamath. People are fed up of this type of blame game. MP Nalin Kumar and MLA Vedvyas Kamath should take immediate action against the highway authorities.

    Prajwal
When the ex MLA printed /boasted his achievements where were you ? Why the present MLA should be held responsible for the misfeeds of ex MLA and local corporator of Padilla and kottara ?as you said it is due to encroachment by builders and in issuing licence neither Kamath nor Kateel has any power .
See the contradiction of mayor "we have cleared all the garbage " and in next sentence he says it overflew because of blockage of drainage " which line to be beleives ?local MLA or Local MP has no power in sanctioning of stalling of any building it wholly rests on Mayor and the ruling party of Corporation

34 houses damaged and the loss is only 41.38 Lac? Now imagine how poor those people will be. There is not even a single 2bhk flat available within city limits cost not less than 50Lakh. Forget about independent house, you can't get a house for less than 1 crore. But 34 houses and only 41.38Lacs......
Poor will become poorer and the rich will become richer and richest. Nobody knows where does the crores and crores go which government releases every year.

    Mr. Mayor!
    Mayve you are right!
    However you can't be choosy?

Ask your Corporators to be polite and first listen to the residents. There is no civil law that cannot be challenged as per the Jurisdiction. The only way ahead is to first get into the resident's shoe and walk the distance to meet your goal. Don't ne aggressive. Have a Courtessy Class from your own Ex MLA J.R. Lobo

Let me ask you just 3 issues

    1. Why have you let the Prestige Hotel encroacj desifn it's own Parking facilities from our tax paid wealth.

    2. Opposite to Don Bosco Hall how have you let risky excavations that have life threats in the neighbourhood

    3. Though the last mentioned herein!
How have you let the water channels be encroached in formation of roads?
There are Judicial orders that restrict to such encroachment.

If you consider the people of Mangaluru as Peace Loving and you can plan your own pleasure against the rights of the people, yes! It's your paradise

    NHAI is under Central/Union Govt.
What's the use of implementing such projects? Just to create more problems?
If problems are more than the benefits, so called developments, a national waste, waste of time and energy!
While doing something, it should be done in an orderly manner, anticipating problems like these!
Is it not waste of Tax payers money? Pay taxes and invite troubles?

Now starts the blame game. We all know Mangalore has recorded highest rainfall in a day on Tuesday 29 May, that Mangalore was flooded.

It is a bitter fact that planning of drainage, water flowing systems, or even rain water harvesting has been chaotic in our city. We look and measure city development in terms of Buildings / sky scrapers coming up in our city, so we call it as a Smart City. Very Good. But smart city with smart officials should also have smart thinking isnt it?

We all know it pours when it rains in Mangalore & recently we know city gets flooded with any amount of rain fall. MCC issues permissions to buildings without manually checking spots, MCC issues Completion certificates without inspecting sites. So when builders pay the officials, they dont care about civilians problems. Officials fail to check on all aspects at almost all places. Results are in front of our eyes.

Mangalore Monsoon has been always a challenge and it will remain so. By the year, land space reduces and building space increases in our city. Hence taking basic extra care about drainage systems, sewage systems, water logging in low areas is supposed to be checked before rains start. We wait for disasters to strike then panic about solutions. So it is nothing new that these situations arise. But officials should rise above these challenges to be ready to face these issues.
