Red alert in coast: Holiday declared for schools for two days as heavy rain expected

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 8: Coastal Karnataka, which is struggling to recover from the affects of the recent downpour, has been warned about the possibility of heavy rain on two days.

Deputy commissioners of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have declared holiday for schools on Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9. If students have already reached schools on Friday morning, teachers are directed to ensure that they return to their homes safely.

The meteorological department has predicted very heavy rain in Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on Friday and Saturday. Dakshina Kannada district too will experience heavy rainfall during this period. The department said that it expects up to 200 mm rainfall in some places.

Coastal areas will experience blowing of wind from western direction with a velocity of 35 to 45 km per hour. At times the speed might go up to 50 km per hour, it said. As such, fishermen have been warned to be extra cautious. In the coming days, monsoon will intensify further.

During the two days mentioned above, districts situated in south inland and north inland will also get heavy rain. Some districts to the south may get very heavy rainfall, it stated.

On Thursday, coastal areas, Malnad and some districts of northern hinterland got good rainfall. Comparatively, intensity of rainfall was less in districts located in southern hinterland. A few areas in Dakshina Kannada district got rainfall up to 100 mm.

Almost all parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts experienced well spread out rainfall on Thursday.

Both DCs have taken very good decision because we have already had bitter experience in last downpour. But one thing I can suggest for coastal Karnataka to conduct schools and colleges till the end of May and declare holidays from 1st June to 31st July. So that we can protect children from monsoon disturbances and casualties, instead of blaming district administration, school/college heads or departments concerned for their inability to prevent casualties.

Summer vacation is the practice of Britishers or Europeans to shut down schools, colleges, Courts and business concerns to rest in the cool climate of their countries during the period.

Who is this DC who declares holidays at every twist and turn? Monsoon is nothing new to Mangalore. By the way what rains are we talking about? The real rain was when we were children and it used to rain cats and doges for days and nights without a break. The sun used to peep out of the clouds after weeks of rain. The present day rains are just a fraction of that. We never used to get holidays because of rains. We had to shout and fight for a holiday. Those days are gone forever. The present day rains come as a guest, shake hands and leave in thirty minutes.

People must carry their own boats during rainy season. This inflammable boat should be bullet proof against drainage and sewage water and move away at your own risk .Someone need to develop flying cars in air and go to work.Because nature is nature we cannot go against nature.Lets us be nature friendly.
