Mangaluru: Charmadi Ghat closed - landslides, fallen trees disrupt vehicular movement

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DC)

Mangaluru, Jun 12: Incessant rain over the last few days which has affected vehicular movement has resulted in closure of Charmadi Ghat stretch.

The landslides at nine places and the fallen trees following rains in the region on Monday June 11 have caused inconvenience to the commuters leading to heavy traffic jams in the Ghat. Meanwhile, a team, led by social worker Hasanabba, is clearing the route in Charmadi Ghat.

Children and other commuters have been stranded with shortage of food.

The Shiradi ghat has been closed for highway improvement works which is yet to be opened for vehicular movement. The alternative route through Charmadi ghat often gets disrupted following landslides and huge trees getting uprooted due to heavy rains.

Those who are heading towards Bengaluru or Mysuru can take alternative route through Puttur-Sullia-Sampaje or through Bajegoli-Mala-Kudremukh. Those travelling from Udupi can take an alternative route through Bajegoli-Mala-Kudremukh or Balebare-Hulikal ghat.

The unscientific drainage works is the main reason for the landslides which causes frequent traffic disruptions in the region.

Dinesh, both Charmadi & Shiradi ghats r managed by Union Road & transport ministry headed by Nitin Ghadkari. So U should blame them, in spite of the fact that we were assured by them that Shiradi ghat will be opened for the Vehicular movements from 1st June onwards.

Hats off to this gem of a guy Hasanabba.

God has showered him with blessings for all the help he provides for accident victims on charmadi.

For the ones who do not know about him he runs a small restaurant which serve the most delicious need dosa and fish curry at the base of charmadi ghat from many years.

Do Google Abt this guy . About the landslides well we cannot do much about it. We humans have messed with nature and now nature is fighting back. Better planning may have helped but then who can face nature's fury.

Better if the authorities concerned clear off the road at the earliest to ensure smooth traffic and connectivity.

The landslide of ghats shows how vulnerable coastal districts to rains. If road connection is cut off rescue and other emergency services will be hampered during rainy season. Our elected representatives of coastal districts must put pressure on government to maintain all weather roads connecting Karavali to upper parts of ghats. Some years ago an environmentalist from other district was saying that their next target after closing of mines in Kudremukha, is to close down Karkala- Bajegoli- Kudremukha road for traffic and eventually area under Kudremukh sanctuary to be notified as national park evicting people who have been living for centuries. We should not allow any existing ghats roads to close anytime.

So bad.. Concerned authorities and Elected Representatives should have a basic knowledge of completing Shiradi work before rainy season (before June). I wonder, how can they complete the work in Shiradi ghat at this time when it is raining so badly and what would be the quality of work which is being carried out now.
