Kalaburagi, Jul 1: Wife of Irshad Ullah Khan, deputy commissioner of commercial taxes in the city, was questioned relating to a case of alleged 'love Jihad'. In this connection, her laptop and cellphone were seized. The officer is currently posted in the city.
Reports say that the said case involves a Hindu girl from Gujarat and Muslim male from Kerala. It is said that Khan's wife was in contact with the girl when the latter was studying in Bengaluru during 2014-15. The girl had fallen in love with a Muslim boy studying in the same college. Sources said that initially the two were friends and soon fell in love and got married.
The girl embraced Islam thereafter and started living in Jeddah as the boy's parents stayed there. The girl found it impossible to get used to the culture of the family. The lady finally left her husband and returned to her parents in Gujarat, it is gathered.
Thereafter a private complaint was filed in Kerala high court in January, alleging that the girl was forced to convert. The complaint also stated that the girl was sexually harassed by other people in Saudi. It was also said that there were plans to send her to Syria to fight for Islamic State. As Islamic State was named in the case, the case was handed over to National Investigation Agency. In her statement recorded by the agency, the girl stated about her Bengaluru stay and her contact with the family of the commercial taxes officer.
Irshad Ullah Khan said he and his wife will cooperate with the authorities and that the officials have recorded his wife's statement besides taking away her laptop and phone. Khan also said that his wife had spoken to the girl only once without really knowing her, and insisted that she had no role in the matter.
The lady, living in Diamond District apartment at Jeevan Bima Nagar, Bengaluru, was subjected to questioning by National Investigation Agency, which also seized her laptop and cellphone. They were taken away to check whether the two were still in touch with each other and also whether Khan's wife had in any way helped or sheltered the couple in the past, sources stated.
It is learnt that the NIA officials have seized eight laptops and 12 mobile phones. Khan's wife was later released.
