Bengaluru, Jul 6: The budget presented on behalf of the coalition government in the state has come up with a number of programmes. However, the fear that about 28,847 government schools might face closure because of the enforcement of quality concept is getting deep-rooted.
The budget proposes to merge 28,847 government and aided schools where the number of students is very less, with 8,530 government schools. The government has stated that government and aided schools with shortage of students located within a radius of one kilometre would be merged with nearby schools. As such, schools with less
number of students may have to be closed in the coming days.
A sum of Rs 150 crore has been earmarked this time for repair of primary, high school and PU college buildings being run by the government. Rs 5 crore is being used to provide basic facilities to state level training centres of Bharat Scouts and Guides and also to strengthen training centres.
From next year onward, English medium classes will be introduced in government primary schools along with Kannada medium classes to attract students. At first, on experimental basis, English medium classes would be opened in a thousand schools.
At the same time, 4,100 Anganwadi centres presently run by women and child welfare department would be turned into child-friendly centres and shifted to the premises of government primary schools subject to availability of space. Subject to feasibility, in phases, LKG and UKG classes will be started in government schools. To exercise control over the actual attendance of teachers and children in 48,000 government schools in the state, biometric machines would be introduced. This scheme is proposed to be implemented in the next three years. For the current year, a sum of Rs 5 crore is being provided for this purpose.
