Mysore, Oct 2: Rains played spoilsport for the inauguration of ‘Raitha Dasara,’ which is being organised for the first time in Mysore during Dasara festival, on Wednesday.

The rain started at around 5 pm and threw all the preparations by the sub-committees out of gear. Soon after. when Agriculture Minister S A Ravindranath inaugurated the ‘Raitha Dasara,’ the power supply went off causing embarrassment to the organisers. The minister was forced to address the gathering without the public address system because of which it was not at all audible for farmers as well as general public. Ravindranath finished the formality of speech and left the venue. The farmers had no place to sit as the whole area became wet.

Colourful mela

As many as 100 decorated bullock carts from various parts of the district congregated at the venue. Farmers had decorated their bullock carts with bunting. Some even painted the horns of the bullock and also the cart. Although, agriculture department had plans to bring at least 160 bullock carts, only 120 bullock carts took part in the procession.

Dull attendance

Security checks and rains resulted in poor turn out of music buffs to witness the performance by Vasundara Das, a multi-lingual playback singer, organised as part of ‘Yuva Dasara' programme.

In the name of security, the cops denied entry to people carrying mobile phones and carry bags. Disappointed over this, many people left the venue to watch the programme live on a TV channel. After sometime, police came to know that there were hardly any people in the gallery and decided to allow everybody provided they switch off their cellphones. In spite of this, there were hardly 8,000-9,000 people in the ground as against the expected turn out of around 25,000 to 30,000 people.

The cops did not allow media persons inside the venue in spite of producing the press pass issued by the district administration. One of the press photographers, who accidentally came from a different gate was heckled by police. Seeing their colleague in trouble, the press persons went to his rescue.

One of the cops got in to a heated argument with Parliamentary Secretary to CM and MLA S A Ramadas when the latter tried to intervene.

Film fest

As many as 49 films will be screened at eight cinema halls and also at Kalamandir and Bal Bhavan in Mysore in the ongoingDasara film festival. International award winning films will be screened at Kalamandir. Children’s movies will be screened at Bala Bhavan.
