Mangaluru: Church-administered schools to teach Indian Constitution

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 12: Henceforth, 'Indian Constitution' would be taught as a mandatory subject and part of the curriculum in all the schools in the country being run by Catholic churches, from standards 1 to 10.

This decision has been taken by the education and culture department of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI). To enable the schools to teach the contents mentioned in the preamble of the constitution, a nine-page handbook was released on Wednesday July 11.

Catholic churches have been running over 75,000 educational institutions in the country with combined student strength of six to seven crore. CBCI has expressed the opinion that if they are taught about the introduction, values, and principles of the constitution, a sense of genuine patriotism, national integration and love for their country can be inculcated among the students.

Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza

Expressing happiness at this development, Mangaluru diocese bishop, Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, said that this is a right step. He said that arrangements would be made to teach about Indian Constitution in all the educational institutions falling under his diocese. Currently, in addition to the subjects listed by the government, moral education is being imparted. Indian Constitution would be taught along with moral education, it is gathered.

The said decision was one of the several decisions taken at the 33rd conference of CBCI held during February this year at Bengaluru, in which 176 bishops had taken part. This has already been implemented in Kerala.

Education about Indian constitution would be provided through four tools. In the first one, 85 words in the preamble of the constitution would have to be learnt by the students by heart. Extempore contests would be held and marks would be awarded.

In the second phase, importance of the preamble would be explained, and group discussions, quizzes, essay competitions, poster competitions etc would be held.

In the third phase, skit on the subject, 'We the citizens of India', would be staged.

Helping the students to properly assimilate the meanings of words like sovereign, socialistic, democracy, secular, republic etc would be undertaken in the fourth phase.

At last the catholic bishops came to know the importance of indian constitution. Schools used to teach abut indian constitution although it was not a separate subject decades back and i dont think the students doesnot know about the indian constitution.

Instead of teaching it a separate subject i want the bishops to join politics. If yogi adithyanath can join and become the chief minister why cant our bishops.

Good initiative, but who will teach the Constitution to teachers who have no idea of what Law is. As one commentator said, the Ten Commandments contain all that is morally correct and should be taught, not just in Catechism. As well, there should be some reference to offences in the Penal Code in any instruction... how individuals can assert their constitutional rights and obligations.

    Good move.
Better to include detailed history which is older than 400 years ( where its mainly about only how we were conquered etc)
Pre-500 years history will instill pride about the nation as well.

What a good move! We all should know all do's and don'ts, Law of land etc. How I wish in schools it is mandatory to teach moral science with examples, knowledge in electrical and plumbing minor faults to repair and farming. From 2010 onward i noticed year after year people started to leave their paddy fields barren. Then came a highly qualified young man, started farming in a particular area and now in that area no barren lands.

    I think this is unnecessary..

When constitution becomes absolute change is definitely needed... So that is not permanent!

I was reading Egyptian history, for every 500 years there was new dynasty.. That means what? Old dynasty becomes week and new becomes necessity...

And moreover people living today are not permanent... After two hundred years new set of people comes and orders will be different... Please mark my words!

If change becomes reality then let's teach new one.
Govts, courts citizens and all Indian entities have to abide under the tenets of present constitution.
Like wise there can't be two Govts at one time. Till new Govt take form, present rules.

A ridiculous argument here: if something becomes obsolete in 200 years, it is not worth learning!

Most of IT technology becomes obsolete every five years. Does it mean learn no IT?

    @ Sri Elder....
    For example....
Let's assume that somebody is suffering from deadly disease in your family, & at present there is no medicines which may cure that disease completely... Bit after 10 or 20 years medical technology may be advanced and if medical experts develop medicines which will cute it means... Will you wait for 10 to 15 years for that????
Will you start medication after 10 or 15 years???

Very sensible decision to teach about Indian Constitution, specially because most of the citizens, even among educated are not aware what is written in the constitution. Extremely sad affair!
Therefore law breakers and vested interest are taking undue advantage of peoples ignorance and misleading them.
Law administrators should be happy about this decision because their role played by them will be known to the society at large.
Media also should be happy because they are likely to get more public support for exposing law breakers.

    Eva,
Good idea. But who will initiate as there is no single unified body that runs schools and colleges as the Christians do? Perhaps the Government of each State should do this, and compete with the Christian-run schools. Teachers in government-run schools do a lousy job in regular subject areas, but they can call in scholars of Bhagvad Gita to conduct classes in that area.
