Puttur, Jul 13: A Kerala-based lorry carrying meat wastes and dumping it on Karnataka border areas illegally was caught red-handed by the public here near Baleguli in Irde village on Wednesday July 11.
The meat waste from chicken stalls in Kerala was transported in lorries and was dumped in public places coming under Vittal and Puttur station limits.
Despite several complaints from the locals, the gram panchayat and the police had failed to take any action earlier.
On Wednesday, a lorry transporting huge stock of chicken waste stopped mid-way due to heavy rains on the mud road in Irde village. The matter came to light when the locals, who were passing-by, questioned the driver and two others. Meanwhile, locals who gathered in large numbers, asked the transporters to remove the waste dumped illegally and warned them not to dump in their village.
Later the waste was dumped in Puttur dumping yard after paying necessary fees.
Earlier a case was registered by Alike gram panchayat, after waste was found dumped in Billampadavu area. The police department too had swung into action and were patrolling in the area for the last few days.
On Wednesday July 11, after being informed by the locals, the police team from Puttur rural and Vittal station rushed to the spot and detained three persons from the lorry.
Since the Kerala government does not permit illegal waste disposal from slaughterhouses and impose fine, some traders engage lorries to dump the waste in Karnataka border . It is said that lorry owners are paid per sack of waste.
