Mangaluru, Jul 26: Dakshina Kannada Ex-servicemen Welfare Association, Lions Club International Mangaluru and Shastavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Trust observed Kargil Vijay Diwas at Kadri War Memorial here on Thursday, July 26.

Dr Murali Mohan Choontharu, Home Guards district commander, Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, trustee Shastavu Bhoothanatheshwara Trust, Murali Manohar and Roopa Bangera, corporators, Retd Col N Sharath Bhandary, Brig Ivan and others offered floral tributes and lit candles to pay homage to the martyrs of Kargil war.

Addressing the gathering, Vijaynath Vittal Shetty said, “It is our duty to remember our martyred soldiers who were part of wars. Because of their bravery, we are safe in the country. We should thank their families for their sacrifice. But now, our young generation does not give much importance to our soldiers and martyrs. The presence of number of youths here shows how they observe these type of days. This should change. If a person dies in communal violence, thousands gather to pay homage, to hold protests and others related events. But when a commemoration day comes, no one attends it. Our youth need to be guided on this.”

Retd Col N Sharath Bhandary said, “This day, the Indian Army chased away the last platoon of Pakistani soldiers from their bunkers in Kargil. The Indian soldiers won the battle fighting at temperatures below zero degree and won the war for their motherland. Many Indian soldiers lost their lives while more than thousand were wounded. Hence, it is our duty to remember their sacrifice.”

A large number of people attended the event and paid homage to martyrs.
