Udupi: Hazel Jyotsna Mathias from Shirva dies under mysterious circumstances in Saudi Arabia

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 27: A nurse, who was a native of Kuthyaru near Shirva here, who was working in a hospital run by the health department of Saudi Arabia has met with death under mysterious circumstances.

The nurse whose death has evoked doubts happens to be Hazel Jyotsna Mathias (28), wife of Ashwin Mathias, resident of Daddu in Baggathota road, Kuthyaru. She was the daughter of Robert Quadros and Helen Quadros couple from Agar Dande in Kuthyaru.

Hazel was working in Al Miqua General Hospital run by the health ministry of Saudi Arabia since the last about six years. She had spoken to her husband over phone on July 19. Two days after that, a co-worker of Hazel informed the family about her death. But Ashwin does not know even now where and how the death of his wife happened. The reason of her death seems to have been kept under wraps, and the family has not been told about it so far.

Hazel's marriage had taken place four years back, and her husband too was working in Dubai in the past. After he came back, the family had built a new house at Kuthyaru. Hazel had come home during the house warming ceremony and again during the Ramzan holidays.

The family has contacted MLC, Ivan D'Souza, and Udupi MLA, Raghupati Bhat, seeking their help in getting details of this case. Both of them have contacted minister for external affairs, Sushma Swaraj, who has in turn promised to get in touch with the Saudi Arabian government and convey information.

Zilla panchayat member, Wilson Rodrigues, has drawn the attention of the district deputy commissioner, Priyanka Mary Francis, towards this unfortunate incident and predicament faced by the family. She too has collected details from the family and assured to put in efforts to get proper information.

    Dear All,

There seems to be no mysterious circumstances in the death of Hazel Jyotsna Mathias. The Post mortem reveals clear indication of suicide. The reasons GOD only knows. As the enquiry was pending, the Indian em
Let us not guess and spread rumors. As one brother mentioned most of the expatriates are safe in Gulf counties. This incident is very unfortunate and self inflicted.

Regarding indian Embassy involvement, yes the years of apathy has gone and there is a big change in the way embassy staff works in last couple of years. No doubt Indian Associations in Jeddah/Riyadh is working hard for the speedy repatriation of the mortal remains. The volunteers are doing their best to get the necessary Paper works done.Due to the unnatural death the process is taking little time.

Let us pray and support the bereaved families in this difficult times.

    Totally agree.

The Indian Embassy officials here are the most useless lot I have ever seen. They are so rude on the telephone that they don't even entertain or assist in providing inquiries. They flatly say they don't have time and call them personally to their office (s).. I remember a particular case sometime back when one of our own citizen went to ask help concerning non receipt of salary for 4 months at a stretch. Instead of providing succor the official retorted in a rude manner asking him who forced you to land up in this country for taking up employment. The Sri Lankan and Philippines Embassies are two such Embassies who fight it out tooth and nail in order to safeguard the jobs of their citizens and providing them their earned rights. When will our Embassy officials take a leaf from these two Embassies and be a beacon of inspiration to the several millions of citizens spread all over the Middle East? I certainly doubt it even in the ages to come.

Saudi is one of the worst Country to live. Most of the Arabs in Saudi have no courtesy, No Mercy, No Humanity, No Kindness. People who work there don't open their mouth with a fear of loosing jobs and with the fear of Depot. Its hi time to think should we go to Saudi seeking Job and suffer?

I am not agreeing with your comment. Our South canara (undevided) prospered since mid of 1970's because of remitance from gulf nations especially from KSA. I think you dont have any knowledge about gulf nations. Many times you visited gulf nations for emceying . I think you didnt visited KSA.

    L N Rego dear,
No doubt there are instances of worst situations in Saudi Arabia....But I do not think that it is so bad as depicted...It is true that the rules are strict, so many things are forbidden BUT for someone who abides by the rules Saudi is a peaceful place.
As for people - there are bad elements in every nation , every community...
If I were to have an option to live there without having to renew my residence permit I would have probably lived there till my death....
Well, it is my perception of Saudi Arabia and it's people - having lived there for long enough to save enough for my retired life...

Don't expect anything much cooperation from Indian Embassy in Saudi.

I have witnessed myself; a housemaid requesting Embassy personnel to send her India as she could not tolerate the sponsors; but these people kept on instructing her to go back to her sponsors without even taking an initiative to instruct the sponsor to show good behavior towards the housemaid.

One thing is sure that its impossible to get correct information from nations that function on tyranny. People are expected to be happy for giving an opportunity for earning their bread but when you ask for rights, you are defined a traitor.

    @Jennifer,

Its true that many a times the human rights of the workers are violated by sponsors in these countries. But there are case where even Princes are spared and awarded death sentences when they have caught in crimes. Even police officers have been executed for raping other nationals. There are many cases where citizens of these countries have paid "Millions of Riyals" to release the Indian nationals (other nationalities also) who were entitled for death sentence otherwise. Great thing is that these donors never disclose their identity as well. So in summary, all are not similar, as always.

I feel, the main reason behind why we don't get proper information is that our Embassies are very weak. Look at Philippines Embassies. They fight for their citizens until they get justice.
