Most of our bus drivers are all illiterate and uneducated. We can't expect more from them. Our traffic system of Mangalore is 50 years old. First of all to control traffic, shift the service bus stand. 50% of traffic problems will solve. Our traffic department and administration is puppet of Bus owners association.

By the years the traffic has grown 50 times , but the capacity of the roads are the same. The traffic management in Nanthoor is very poor. Because of very few traffic personal are on the junction. And besides the conditions of the roads are very bad. Buses stop on the road without even bothered about there are vehicle behind and block the traffic. If we point there are lots of flaws to be pointed out but the capacity of the officials are a few and we face these issues regularly.

We have forgotten that city buses stop in the middle of the road to allow the passengers to board and alight. Most of these buses don't even have their break lights working. They seem to have been fixed there for decoration in the first place. Non-functional break lights are a real danger as these buses are notorious for unpredictable stops.

This is indeed additional work for The Commissioner and the Traffic Department. However, it is bound to produce results. Over the years traffic has grown immensely and the existing Police Force is not adequate enough to control the traffic.

I have seen on several occasions The Commissioner, The Two Deputy Commissioners and the Assistant Commissioner work till late in the evening and are seen in their respective offices even after 8.00 p.m.

May I suggest something...... Here in U.S.A. (I am presently in America) hardly any traffic police are on the scene. Almost the entire City traffic is controlled by traffic signals. That apart the fines are in the region of $.150/- (ie approximately Rs.10,000). I have no hesitation in suggesting that the fines should be increased to the level of over Rs.750/- for the first offence. Then only the reckless drivers will realize the gravity of guilt.
