Margao: Cuncolim Residents Threaten to Call Goa Bandh on Oct 14 Over Vandalism

Margao, Oct 13: Residents of Cuncolim have on Monday October 13, given an ultimatum to the state police department that their failure to provide details about an investigation into the vandalism of Rakhandar, a place of worship, will result in a statewide strike or ‘bundh’, on Tuesday October 14.

Tension prevailed in Cuncolim, around 12 kms from here, on Thursday October 9, after  news of the incident spread. Locals had demanded the arrest of the miscreants behind the incident. The place is also known as ‘Azoba’, and is located near the culvert at Uskiniarik.

About 700 residents had attended a meeting on Sunday October 12, to chalk out plans to curb such incidents . The meeting decided upon the ultimatum and subsequent call for a bundh.

After the incident, Manohar alias Babu Azgaonkar, panchayat minister, had allegedly stated that Hindus are responsible for the vandalism Rakhnadar. Objecting to this, people  have demanded that Azgaonkar should apologize for his comments as it was not true.

Protestors also set an effigy of Azgaonkar on fire and have threatened to bar his entry to the area unless an apology is forthcoming. Others have also accused the minister of hurting sentiments of Goans and demanded his ouster from the cabinet.
