Moodbidri: Locals Rescue Rare Crested Hawk-Eagle

Moodbidri, Oct 22: A rare bird usually found in south east Asian countries was located at a farm here on Monday October 20. The rare crested hawk-eagle known as ‘Jatayu Pakshi’ in Kannada and colloquially as ‘Juttina Pakki’ was found on the fence of the farm owned by Sampat, at Aliyoor, in Shirtady, near here..
The rare crested hawk-eagle is a carnivore which preys on rabbits and reptiles. It has a lifespan of about 10 years and is a loner. The local ornithologist said this bird is about three months old, and weighs nearly 2.5 kgs. The bird has been handed over to Pilikula Nisargadhama, on the outskirts of Mangalore.
