Congress to organise Bharat Bandh against fuel prices on September 10

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI): The Congress will organise a nationwide shutdown on September 10 over rising fuel prices, parties leaders announced Thursday and asked other opposition parties and civil society groups to join their protest against the government.

The common man was bearing the brunt of the escalating prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas, Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala said.

"The Congress party has decided that we will be giving a call for Bharat Bandh on September 10, Monday, in order to highlight the Rs 11 lakh crore fuel loot and to demand an immediate reduction in central excise duty as also excessive VAT in the state," he told reporters.

Surjewala said the Congress will also demand petrol and diesel should be brought within the ambit of the GST so that the "common man whose budget has gone haywire is provided the requisite relief".

The Congress has also urged opposition parties to join the protest, he said.

"We also call upon other societal groups, NGOs to join this people's movement," he said.

As petroleum prices continue to pinch consumers, trade and transport, the inevitable question is whether the Modi's BJP Government has handled the crisis well.

Narendra Modi rode to power in 2014 by convincing the voters that he had a magic wand to drive fuel prices down and raise the Rupee against the Dollar. With petrol prices across India touching a record high this week with petrol touching Rs 86 per litre in Delhi and diesel at Rs 75 a litre, and the Rupee tumbling to a historic low against the Dollar, life has come a full circle for Modi.

The Brent Crude is trading at a little over $77 and the Reserve Bank of India has already been selling Dollars to stem the free fall of the Rupee. Flashback to 2008 when the Brent Crude reached its historical high of $145, people in India under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid Rs 50 for a litre of petrol. Also, much across the tenure of the UPA-2 Government, Brent Crude traded upwards of $100. As international oil prices do not show any sign of coming down in the immediately foreseeable future, one shudders to think what may happen if international crude prices started reaching the figures that Manmohan Singh had to contend with.

Petrol and Diesel prices have come into the record-breaking zone and while middle class Indians continue to suffer, the government is doing the only thing it can do, pray for the prices to come down

Forecasts suggest the Dollar is expected to touch Rs 74 and crude oil prices are expected to be touching $100 a barrel by May 2019, indicating that Petrol is expected to get its century first. The ‘Naseebwala’ days are over as the government has been hit by the double whammy of rising crude and falling Rupee.
The BJP-led NDA government now has a difficult choice to make. Continue extracting 19.48 per liter and tax the last penny out of the middle class or sacrifice taxes and risk a slowdown. The Naseebwala seems to be running out of luck.
