Kundapur: Student gets washed away in sea while fetching volleyball

Kundapur, Sep 30: In an unfortunate incident that occurred on Sunday, September 30 at Kodi beach near here, a student who was happily spending his weekend by playing volleyball got washed away in the sea.

The victim of this mishap is identified as Manoj Poojary (18), son of Manja Poojary and Devi Poojary couple, residents of Halealive near Kodi here.

Manoj was a second PUC student studying in the arts branch and had gone to the beach to play volleyball along with his friends. It is said that while playing volleyball the ball fell into the sea and Manoj got down in the sea to fetch the same. At the same time, waves with high velocity were generated in the sea because of which Manoj lost the control and got drowned.

Manoj is disappeared in the sea and hundreds of locals are searching for him. Manoj is survived by his parents and two younger sisters. A case in this regard is registered in the Kundapur police station.

    This incident once again calls for 'Swimming' should be mandatory in the schools rather than 'Yoga'.

    I had seen in Philippines children's younger to deceased age are diving deep in the oceans and playing without fear.

    I appeal to Karnataka Education Minister to make Swimming , First Aid and Emergency response mandatory in the schools across state.

    Yoga can't help drowning man from death. Swimming involves muscles than Yoga and more benefit to the healthy life.

    Hope God give the patience to grieved family to the deceased.

    1. The easiest thing to remember is that often the safest/calmest most enticing looking area along a beach is usually a rip. A rip is usually the area void of wave activity and appears darker and deceptively calmer. It can sometimes appear milky or turbulent, but it is always pretty much void of wave activity. All that water coming in via waves has to go back out somehow, this is what a rip is. (see pics).

    2. Always take 5-10 mins when you get to the beach to observe surf conditions and identify where these areas are.

    3. If you are caught in a rip, DO NOT PANIC. Go into floating mode and raise one arm as a distress signal when possible. See which direction the rip is taking you, is it straight out or at an angle? once you have determined this, and if you have the energy, swim to the right or left of the direction of flow, never against. Some rips can move at 3 times the speed of an olympic swimmer, you won't win! If you cannot swim out to either side of the rip, just go with it. Most rips won't take you out very far, and will usually spit you out not long after they take you, so keep calm and save your energy for the swim back to shore.

    How to Identify Rip Currents
    Look for any of these clues:

    a channel of churning, choppy water
    an area having a notable difference in water color
    a line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward
    a break in the incoming wave pattern
    None, one, or more of the above clues may indicate the presence of rip currents. Rip currents are often not readily or easily identifiable to the average beachgoer. For your safety, be aware of this major surf zone hazard. Polarized sunglasses make it easier to see the rip current clues provided above.

    How to Avoid and Survive Rip Currents

    Learn how to swim!

    Rip Currents
    Never swim alone.
    Be cautious at all times, especially when swimming at unguarded beaches. If in doubt, don’t go out!
    Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard protected beach.
    Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards.
    If caught in a rip current, remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly.
    Don’t fight the current. Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim towards shore.
    If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water. When out of the current, swim towards shore.
    If you are still unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself: face the shore, wave your arms, and yell for help.
    If you see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 9-1-1 . Throw the rip current victim something that floats and yell instructions on how to escape. Remember, many people drown while trying to save someone else from a rip current.

    Sir, Well noted. But despite having abundant water bodies in this town people drowning is man made tragedy.
    I believe 'Swimming' should be one of the mandatory activity in schools. Indian Navy with an expertised stationed in Karwar and Mangalore can help this tragedy to occur in the future. Even fire fighters have some sort of training when it comes to life savings.

    Hope tragedy bring the awareness in the public minds.

    More than 150 people died and lost their precious life while demonetization. Many Dalits, Muslims & minorities died due to the lynching from Hindu extremist. That time did you showed the sympathy to others precious life?

    How come people easily forget lost their beloved one precious life while demonetization.
    Same this sri_elder, Karkala commented very ridiculous arrogant and merciless comments while poor people was on que to withdraw their own money Rs. 2,000 for their urgent necessities.
