Kasargod: 6-year-old girl dies, mother injured after stamping on live cable

Kasargod, Oct 2: A girl died when she accidentally stamped on a live cable at Ethadka, Kumbdaje on Monday, October 1. Her mother Jayanti Moolya has sustained serious injuries and is admitted in the hospital.

The deceased is Arpita (6), daughter of Ethadka resident Jayarama and Jayanti. Arpita was a student of first standard at Ethadka U P School.



The incident happened during the evening when the girl came from school and went out in the premises of her house. An electric cable had snapped as a tree had fallen on it during heavy breeze, thunder and lightning. The girl received the shock after she stamped on the live cable and her mother too received the same after she tried to save her daughter.

The electric supply was stopped immediately. As doctors asked to take Arpita to the hospital, she was rushed to Kasargod general hospital. But her life could not be saved.

Father of the deceased girl Jayarama is a construction daily worker. Mother is an Anganwadi assistant. Arpita was the youngest among three children. Her brothers Hemanth is a student of 9th standard in Angalpadi School and Saikumar is studying in third standard in Ethadka U P School.

A case stands registered in Badiyadka police station.

    Very sad to hear this..... MESCOM should perform proper periodic service of these installations... specially during rainy seasons... Even if cable is snapped have some sensors to identify such mishap and warn the localites reg this with a siren and a red light flickering in that area.... Or we will be hearing such sad stories now and then including the personnel of mescom.... some times..,,

    The cable should have tripped power after grounding. Earth fault should have been sensed by the network. But appears systems were faulty or were they bypassed. The company is liable to pay compensation I believe.

    I should say increase the compensation to 1cr at least so that these power distribution companies learn a lesson and consider system maintenance as first priority. The moment the power network is down there should be a maximum time before which system hazard is identified. Privatization of power distribution is one big answer to such mishaps. States like Delhi , Rajasthan , Mumbai etc have private power distribution companies. The Karnataka government should invite companies to invest into distribution business
