Don't depute young women journos to Sabarimala: Hindu outfits to media

Kottayam, Nov 4 (PTI): Several Hindu outfits in Kerala agitating against the entry of women of menstrual age into the famous Sabarimala Temple have urged media outlets not to depute women journalists to cover the issue as the Lord Ayyappa temple is set to open Monday for a special puja.

The 'appeal' was issued by Sabarimala Karma Samiti, a joint platform of right-wing outfits, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Hindu Aikyavedi, ahead of the temple's brief opening, which will be the second time after the Supreme Court allowed entry of girls and women in the age group of 10-50 into it.

The Samiti has been spearheading the agitation against the apex court order lifting an age-old ban on entry of women in menstrual age group into the temple, whose deity Lord Ayyappa is a celibate. When the temple opened for monthly puja for five days last month, the first time after the court order, women reporters, on their way to cover the occasion, were heckled, their vehicles attacked and young female devotees forced to turn back as protesters, including activists of Hindu fringe groups, laid a siege to the road leading to Sabarimala.

In its letter to editors, a copy of which was released to the media, the Samiti said even the entry of women journalists belonging to this age group as part of their job was also likely to aggravate the situation.

"Recognising your right to support or oppose the devotees stand on this issue, we hope you will not take a stand which would aggravate the situation," it said.

The doors of the temple will be opened Monday evening for puja on the occasion of "Chithira Aattavisesham" on Tuesday, the birthday of the last King of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma.

The temple will be closed at 10 pm on Tuesday but would reopen for darshan from November 17 for the three-month-long annual pilgrim season.

The Samiti said devotees belonging to all denominations in Kerala and other parts of the country and even abroad were on a path of 'unabated' agitation subsequent to the apex court judgement allowing entry to young women at the Sabarimala Temple against the wish of the large majority of devotees.

It alleged that even though the Supreme Court has decided to hear the review and writ petitions on the issue on November 13, the state government was intentionally ignoring the "mass movement" against the judgment and was trying to 'hastily' enforce it using police force.

"In such a situation, the devotees are left with no other choice but to continue with the peaceful agitation," it said. The whole issue is about the adamant stand of the state government in forcibly bringing in young women aged between 10 and 50 years which is against the age-old traditions and customs of the Sabarimala Temple, the Samiti said.

In a country where nearly 80% of menstruating women still have to resort to unhygienic means such as cloth, sand and even cow dung to deal with their period, exposing them to the risk of severe diseases and even death, the elimination of GST on essential sanitary products should merely be a first step and definitely not an end in itself.

The Prime Minister Modi government has classified sanitary products as 'aesh-aaraam ki vastu' (luxury goods) and imposed a Lahu Ka Lagaan. Why is Bleeding of women is a Luxury which withdrawn later after many agitation by women of India?

The decision to keep all condoms tax free, even the 'ribbed-for your pleasure' ones, is merely a strategic priority keeping in mind the national government’s agenda of population control and the acceptance of sexual activity as inevitable.

Once again Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh sister organisation Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Hindu Aikyavedi, consider the Bleeding of women who suffer in silence exclude them covering the 'free speech' of Indian women.

The BJP and the RSS which brag about “ Chal, Charitra and Chhera” from rooftops stand exposed. “The slogan of ‘Beti Baccaho, Beti Padhao’ and the moral high ground taken by RSS and BJP stand exposed.

From decades Sabarimala 'Makarjoythi' is observed peacefully, now another Ayodhya of the South India. Is 'God's own country' is going to be another lawless Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat or Bihar?

    Madam,
It's just that we are happy with our belief system and we have definitely no problem with it....
About the relationship between GOD, women and children we deal with it personally... please don't worry....
FOR GOD he doesn't need a mediator or medium to connect with his creation...

But Let the sacred believe system remain as it is, we don't need interference .. LETS all deal with our own believes... and PRAISE the LORD.

No, only the silly people consider it as private subject. There is noting private about it, its a part of the reproductive cycle and an unique gift to female. No need to consider it as private. Talk about it openly.

There are some traditions. Lord Ayyappa is considered as a celibacy and we must follow the rituals. Let there be no entry of women into Sabarimala

    Shankar,

There need to be a solution to the problem anyway ? I know there were some Christian/Muslim women protesting which I condemn but there are surely Hindu women who are desirous to visit the shrine. I agree that the 40 days ritual cannot be kept by women. But they can be permitted for regular worship that they are doing in other temples ???

Why bar them totally ? Did Lord Aiyyappa say this anytime ? Or, is this the decision of the Tanthri family that oversees the functions of the shrine ?

    Jennifer,

The solution is simple - all those over educated personnel should stop interfering in religious matters and let the centuries-old custom sustain with its own purity & spirituality.
Let's not argue here who started the customs as we never question about ur religious believes ever and we respect that with the complete heart.
At least let's live in peace and with the same spirit how our elders lived without any issues all these years!!
