Muslim women should not wear nail polish while offering Namaz, says new fatwa

Saharanpur, Nov 5(DC): Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the most respected Muslim seminaries in India, has issued a fatwa or a decree, against women of the community proferring Namaz or prayer, wearing nail polish.

Mufti Ishrar Gaura, a cleric at the seminary, said, "Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa against Muslim women using nail polish because it is un-Islamic and illegal. Rather women should use Mehendi on their nails."

Gaura told ANI that Islam does not prohibit women from using beauty products, they can apply nail polish but before offering Namaz they have to completely remove it.

The cleric argued that a layer of nail paint hinders the wuzu water (ritual purification) from washing the nails completely.

Farah Faiz, an advocate and national president of Rashtriyawadi Muslim Mahila Sangh, opposed the fatwa by the theological school.

"They never issue a fatwa against men. Islam prohibits a number of things but still, that is carried out by people. They only issue the fatwa against women to do everything with their permission," she said.

"The Darul Uloom is even in Pakistan, but they do not issue such orders there. Only the one based in India come up with such fatwas all the time," she added.

Earlier this year, the seminary ordered that Muslim women should not watch men playing soccer, saying, it violates the tenets of Islam.

"Football is played wearing shorts, so watching men playing with bare knees is forbidden for women; it's against religious belief," senior cleric Mufti Athar Kasmi had said even as Sunni Muslim kingdom of Saudi Arabia had allowed women to watch matches in soccer stadiums.

Last year, the Islamic school issued an edict, prohibiting women from cutting hair and shaping their eyebrows.

Darul Uloom Deoband, which is one of the largest Islamic seminaries in South Asia, is based in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district.

    David,

    Then the one who gives this suggestion to send the fatwa issuer to nail should seriously require some treatment and should be given the task of applying nail polish to himself and jail mates until he becomes normal again.
    The scholar has not forced anyone to follow his fatwa to send him to jail.

    are these clerics from Darul Uloom Deoband gone mad or playing political game ?
    from our childhood we know it's not allowed for girls/women not to wear nail polish, what's why these clerics are issuing fatwa now ? are they woke up just now from deep sleep ?
    and now all over india bhakts got one topic to become islamic scholars.

    @Mohammed,

    Take things as it is and consider this fatwa as fatwa only. Don't relate it to politics. If some person has a query about nail polish and absolution, then the scholar has to answer his fatwa whenever he is asked. He cannot say that this fatwa is already given long ago and I will not answer that.
    If you are a practicing Muslim, take my suggestion and never demean a scholar out of your ignorance. It's a big sin. I am not saying that blindly follow a scholar and become Bhakth of him. Don't be apologetic and condemn the good things.

    When a child doesn't listen to the good teachings, then parents keep on reminding the child about the good things. Then would you say them that why are you repeating your teachings again and again.

    How about cleaning the nails with soap, water and anti bacterial anti dirt liquid and then apply nail polish. Once the nail underneath is clean women need to clean only the top layer of nail polish every time. Men with beard, head and body hair are fully cleansed by water during wuzu while the heart is full of filth and can never be washed away by water????!!!!.....

    By the way why Non Muslim brothers are bothered here much? Do they offer prayer? Do they practice Islam to comment on what is absolutely required to offer Namaz??

    When you guys don't know ABC of Islam and it's teachings then why jumping to give feedback?

    This information of Nail Polish is not a new case here. It's available in the book of Fiqh.

    In order to offer prayer, ablution is a mandatory requirement. How to perform ablution is also explained. It's not just simply pouring water on body. There are certain criterias one need to follow while performing Ablution, and one among such criteria is any chemical has to be washed completely such as Nail Polish. Since we know that nail polish don't get washed away just by pouring water, it has to be removed by other ways. Since the water doesn't touches the surface of the part which is covered by nail polish then ablution will be nullified. And without ablution no prayers are accepted.

    Every practicing Muslim men and women are aware of this basic teachings since childhood, it's nothing new here.

    Fatwa, is someone goes and clarifies his/her doubt to a learned scholar to which they reply based on Quran and Hadith.

    To those who are arguing here to show verse of nail polish in Quran, to such ignorants let me tell you that Islam is not just Quran alone, but includes the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) which are derived from Quran to which we call Hadith to lead a way of life to be success not just in this world but in the hereafter.

    I don't know why commentators find this fatwa as a form of discrimination against women.
    This fatwa is generally against use of any form of liquid that invalidates absolution ( purification by washing some parts of body) before we offer prayers. This fatwa is given due to the reason that the nail polish will not allow water to reach that particular area of nails.
    If men were to apply nail polish, then this fatwa applies to men also. But that is irrelevant here in our society.

    @David,

    If you follow your own advice, You better don't take bath and never wash "anything", and keep on washing your heart until you become 100% pure. When you become 100% pure by heart, you can start washing body parts.
    Cleanliness and keeping yourself refreshed is also a part of faith. It goes along with the process of cleansing your heart.

    Nailpolish using while namaz-
    Before offering namaz a men or women should make wudu(Ablution). During Ablution if you had applied nailpolish your wudu will not be considered as valid. This is followed by all Muslims around the world.

    What a pity that ladies/women are subject so many traditional, Religious and social discrimination and restrictions. Manmade restrictions and being followed from time memorial and very difficult to ignore them. But there should be a remedy or reform need to take place sooner or later.
    Man comes from mother, needs woman as wife and companioun, children need to a mother and maximum punishment takes on female gender.
