Panaji, Nov 22: State home minister and Congress leader Ravi Naik has alleged that party’s political opponents may try to take political advantage of the increasing idol desecrations happening in the state.

“We have appealed the people to remain calm. Our political opponents can take the political advantage of the situation,” Naik told reporters during a press conference at Congress house here on Friday November 21.

Naik, a senior Congress leader, is campaigning in the Pale constituency which is going for by-polls on November 26. The constituency is going for elections after its sitting Congress legislator Gurudas Gawas passed away.

The home minister said that the police are on their job to nab the brain behind the increasing idol desecrations in the state.

“Police are doing impartial inquiry into the matter. But we fear that the political opponents may try to encash the situation,” Naik said.

Goa has reported spurt in idol desecration incidents recently. The state government has constituted a special team to probe into these incidents, which has not been able to get any breakthrough.

The state chief minister Digamber Kamat earlier had announced a prize of Rs 1 lac for the one who will give information to break the case.

“Through these desecrations someone is trying to touch the sentiments of the people. We cannot provide protection to each and every temple or shrine. We have appealed people to be vigilant,” the home minister said.
