87 inmates on the run after Indonesia prison break

Jakarta, Nov 30 (IANS): Indonesian authorities said on Friday that 87 inmates were on the run after more than a 100 escaped from a prison in the Indonesian province of Aceh.

"One hundred and thirteen prisoners escaped. So far we have captured 26 prisoners and we are still looking for the other 87," Aceh Regional Police Chief Rio S. Djambak told Efe news.

The prisoners broke out of Banda Aceh Penitentiary in Lambaro on the outskirts of provincial capital Banda Aceh on Thursday night during prayer time, but Djambak ruled out a large-scale mutiny.

Authorities have beefed up security of the prison which returned to normal Friday morning.

At the beginning of this year prisoners also breached security at the prison after burning one of the buildings that housed about 700 inmates.

In May 2017, about 450 prisoners escaped from a crowded prison in Sumatra after overpowering guards in what authorities described as one of the biggest prison breaks in Indonesian history.
