Mangalore, Dec 15: State law and parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Kumar asked the district and taluk-level courts to hold their hearings and other proceedings and write decrees in Kannada. While appreciating a few judges for implementing Kannada in the day-to-day affairs of the courts, he exhorted other judges also to follow suit.

Speaking as the chief guest at the district-level convention of lawyers held on the occasion of the inauguration of the legal unit of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the BJP in the city on Sunday December 14, he said that the implementation of Kannada is needed not merely to show love for the language but also to enable people to relate themselves with the court matters.  He recollected that 50 judges who followed the practice of delivering judgments in Kannada were accorded state level felicitation recently. The minister also felt, that implementation of Kannada in High Court proceedings would be impracticable as judges from other states too get posted to High Courts.

He advised the Lawyers Forum of the BJP to draft a programme towards inculcating anti-terrorist sentiments among the general public. The struggle against terrorism should become a nationalist movement, he argued. Kumar also called upon lawyers to take a firm stand on the issue of not defending terrorists and become a model for others. As absenteeism on the part of lawyers and getting cases frequently adjourned affects delivery of justice, he advised them to present their arguments on the dates allotted, without seeking adjournments.

The minister had a word of advice for young advocates. He felt, that the profession of the notary is fit for old or physically weak lawyers and not the young ones. "The young lawyers should engage in honing their capabilities through able handling of cases in courts," he felt.

Nitte Education Trust president N Vinay hegde unveiled the portrait of ex-Loksabha speaker K S Hegde, who had also worked as the Supreme Court judge. He called upon the lawyers to cogitate upon the emergency that was clamped in the country in the year 1977 and also the economic emergency the country is facing at present, and come up with solutions and right ideas for leading the country towards a prosperous future. "The lawyers should take cudgels on behalf of common people who face injustice, exploitation and corruption," he advised.

Senior lawyers Jayaram Shetty, Rajaram Semita and Nemiraj Shetty were felicitated on the occasion. Minister Suresh Kumar administered oath to the lawyers present, pledging to do everything possible to fight terrorism and protect society.

BJP district president K Monappa Bhandary inaugurated the convention. Joint convener of the legal cell Ramakrishna Rai welcomed. Various dignitaries were present.
