Udupi, Dec 27: The Ayyappaswamy devotees who have been following a strict routine and observing austerities since some time as per the tradition before embarking on the pilgrimage to Shabarimala in Kerala to pay obeisance to Lord Ayyappa there, performed the ritual of walking barefoot on burning charcoal at Sri Vasudev Temple in Kaup Koppalangady near here, on the morning of Thursday December 25.

Under the leadership and guidance of Andi Guruswamy, the devotees then offered 'Appa Seve' to the presiding deity at the temple here.  Hundreds of devotees attended various Vedic rites performed on the occasion.

'Shanishwara Mahatme', a Yakshagana episode, was staged by Sri Mahalingeshwara Maha Ganapati Yakshagana troupe, Ucchila.

The devotees of Ayappaswamy from this region begin their pilgrimage to Shabarimala after performing these rituals every year.
