Khamenei vows 'unprecedented defeat' for US sanctions

Tehran, Jan 9 (IANS): Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged his countrymen on Wednesday to withstand the US sanctions against the Islamic republic.

"Through the exercise of prudence, the Iranian nation and the officials should turn the US sanctions into an unprecedented defeat for the great Satan (the US)," Khamenei was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

He called on the Iranian officials "for resistance against the US and Europeans bluster and idol talk", saying that "neither their threats, nor their words, promises and signatures are valid".

The US in May 2018 withdrew from the 2015 international nuclear deal that Iran signed with world powers and imposed the sanctions on Tehran's oil exports, banking sector and other parts of the economy which had been lifted under the landmark agreement.
