Mysore, Jan 3: Mysore Jail on Friday wore a different look.
A small pandal was put up inside the jail premises and a priest was busy chanting hymns. At 12:15 pm, a couple, clad in traditional wedding attire, entered into wedlock and the authorities of jail solemnised the wedding. Fellow prisoners wished the newly-weds with ‘akshate’. The jail authorities donned the role of friends and relatives of the newly wedded couple and wished them a happy married life.
This is not a scene from a movie. The wedding actually took place at a jail in Mysore. This wedding disproved the theory that weddings should take place only in a choultry, temple, or house. The bride, Kumari, a teacher, and the groom, Lokesh, who is in jail for killing Kumari’s eleven-month girl child.
A few years ago, the duo had fallen in love with each other, and Kumari had a baby. In a fit of anger over some issue, Lokesh had thrown Kumari’s child into a canal. Subsequently, Kumari had filed police complaint, based on which he was arrested and put behind the bars.
Changed her mind
After one year, she changed her mind and decided to marry Lokesh. She filed an appeal before the court, seeking permission to marry him.
The court, which examined the plea purely on humanitarian grounds and directed the jail authorities to permit their wedding to be held in jail premises.
Indeed, it is a memorable marriage for Kumari and Lokesh.
