Mangalore, Mar 7: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj visited the contentious area near the State Bank in the city, where the City Corporation has undertaken a demolition drive to clear the area of illegal encroachments, which the merchants have termed as illegal, on Friday March 6. After inspecting the drive undertaken against the illegal constructions and encroachments, he asked those carrying on their business illegally on public property, to immediately vacate the encroachments.

The City Corporation had identified over 130 shops near the State Bank area, for having flouted norms, making illegal constructions and encroaching upon the government property. The revenue department officials of the Corporation had marked the encroached portions four days ago. The merchants were asked to vacate the encroached lands.

Most of the shop owners have already withdrawn from the government land. A few are still to comply with the instructions. The deputy commissioner personally warned them during his visit, to immediately shift their shops from the roadsides.  He informed them that the City Corporation will resume its operation and demolish illegal constructions and shops on Saturday March 7, if they do not vacate the encroachments on their own by the evening of Friday March 6.

City Corporation commissioner Samir Shukla, revenue officer Pravin Karkera and other officials accompanied the deputy commissioner during the visit.
