Mangaluru, Apr 2: Residents in Mangaluru have expressed their displeasure on police inspecting vehicles near junctions, causing traffic congestion. Also, stopping vehicles suddenly on middle of the road has led to accidents. The issue was also highlighted in the weekly phone-in programme with the police commissioner.

On Monday night, cops tried stopping a two-wheeler rider near Nanthoor. The biker who wanted to avoid hitting the cop, veered to the side. The car behind the bike, rammed into the bike and the vehicle behind the car was also damaged.

Police commissioner Sandeep Patil

A large crowd gathered at the spot and began a flash protest against the traffic police for frequently stopping vehicles late in the night for inspection. They alleged that the vehicles are stopped in the middle of the road resulting in accidents.

Police commissioner Sandeep Patil is taking all kind of preventive measures in order to bring some discipline on the road. From the past four days, 272 cases have been booked for drunk driving, 442 cases booked for creating inconvenience for the pedestrians by stopping the vehicle on zebra cross, 144 cases for shrill horns, 186 cases for tint glasses, 212 vehicles have been towed for parking in no parking areas.

Police commissioner Sandeep Patil is also making waves on social media. The Police commissioner has started a twitter handle @compolmlr for the citizens to raise their concerns. His post on this twitter handle says, "Please share information on any illegal acts, traffic problems, gambling, drugs, any other issues...I assure that immediate action would be taken."

Already, many citizens of the city have responded to the commissioner appreciating his step in the right direction to improve the law and order situation. In addition, many have raised their concerns also.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, police commissioner Sandeep Patil said, "First of all, several lives has been lost due to negligent driving, over speeding, so we have to book cases for it. As preventive measures we are putting up zig zag barricades, humps wherever needed. When a vehicle is stopped by the traffic police they avoid stopping the vehicle or try to escape. Our main intention in booking the case is to save the life be it for rash driving or not wearing helmets. When we enforce any traffic rule, even public should cooperate to help avoid accidents and prevent people from losing their lives.

“Whenever we receive complaints from the public, we have coordinated with ACP to take preventive steps. Here, we have to enforce traffic rules to prevent accidents. Also, we have to take care that while enforcing traffic rules, there is no inconvenience for the public,” he added.

    Dear Sir,
Its good that your coming up with new ideas to improve the city and make the traffic flow smooth and avoid any hindrance.
Doing inspections of the vehicles is good, but make its safely and not like some cops hide behind the trees or poles and suddenly jump out of nowhere and come in front of the vehicle. That time the driver gets scared and loses control and the incident occurs.
While stopping the vehicles use reflectors rather than putting a torch to the drivers eye. If the person doesn't stop, then impose hefty fines and confiscate the vehicle and after imposing the vehicle put storage charges for the vehicle.
To be frank people will change and everything will be fine, if you all be strict and start imposing hefty fines.
My aim is to roads be safer for use, so that people can reach home safely and spend time with their family.

In Bombay even 5% cases of jumping signals, driving in one way streets, driving without helmet can escape without being caught.
In Bangalore, even 5% of such cases get caught.
Traffic police in Mangalore, should take example of Bombay city instead of slowly deteriorating situation towards Bangalore. At present in Mangalore, most of two wheelers and auto rickshaws drive in one way streets in wrong directions. Helmets are mainly for Hampankatta area only. Rest of Mangalore does not require helmet it looks like. Parking in no parking area is birth right of majority, mostly vehicles with KL registration in front of hospitals (which are mainly owned by KL people.
What kind of co-0peration is expected from citizens?

Police should be stern with auto drivers because they park their auto rickshaw anywhere to pull in passengers. They do park on the footpath obstructing pedestrians and near gates of mostly hospitals, banks, temples, church and etc.

Sir, I bring to your attention the following issues. Hope you read this. Overtaking on left side. Using high beam in city limits. Using led headlights. No helmets. Not driving inside proper lane. Deliberately driving on mud causing loss of control and accidents. Exceeding speedlimit 80 (highways). Brake lights and indicators not working. Emitting black smoke from exhaust. Not at all applying brake at junction and zebra crossings. Stopping suddenly in middle of road to pick passengers. Gas tankers driving daytime. Overloaded lorries. Lorries carrying sand without covering.

Use of led headlamps is not an offence. The use of head lamps that came as an original part of the car (whether led or halogen) is within the law as the car and its parts have been homologated. Use of after market products and modifications may be illegal.

    Dear the police commissioner,

In most of the traffic junctions or at round about instead of watching and controlling traffics, some police in charge were busy in their mobiles . keep monitoring them by a special team of Patrolling police vehicles and take the video recording of those police staff who are on mobile phones as well as video recording of vehicles who violate the traffic rules.

Irrespective of Senior citizen, or youth or lady driver, Neither drive excessively high speed nor drive extremely low. Maintain a speed limit that is safe for everyone on that road.

I would say Sir enforce the traffic rules and make the offenders obey by imposing heavy fines. Only when it hurts then the public will be forced to co-operate. I applaud the efforts of the current Police chief by reducing the noise of horns and noticeably the stoppage of fire crackers at night. Keep at it Sir as theses bad habits do not go away easily. Appreciate the Mangaluru Police.

Sir, I really appreciate your interest to set right the Traffic system. But first of all you must ask the administrations to vacate the shops built for Parking purposes. Most of the buildings violated the plan which they presented at the time of applying for Licence. That is why this Traffic problem in Mangalore. I hope you will vacate all such illegal shops and provide space for Parking.

Whenever certain existing rules are strictly enforced there are comments and even objections from some members of the public. The Police department has a difficult job. People who have been breaking rules for a long time now find it difficult to fall in line.

Worst offenders are the drivers of Wheelers, rickshaws and buses. Over speeding and overtaking from the wrong side are common offences.

It is good to see The Commissioner of Police taking personal interest and trying to strictly enforce rules.

Dear Police commissioner Sandeep Patil ,

My humble request is that please advise all traffic police team to keep an eye on Zebra crossing. The reason is the pedestrians wanted to cross on Zebra crossing but the vehicles are not stopping. They take it for granted the Zebra crossing. Here in Dubai traffic system is praiseworthy . If any body crosses on the Zebra crossing whether a single person or a crowd it is immaterial the vehicle must stop.
Please take this as serious suggestion. Thank you.

The two wheeler driving by some youths and service provider like Uber eats, swiggy and zomato is very dangerous.some are doing for their daily hood and some for pleasure. Speed break some system like GPS is to be introduced to safe guard the life of youth. It is because of their age they drive fast.so department instead of trying to punish these youth , control the speed of vehicle and thereby control accident s.the same procedure may be followed for 4 wheeler.every individual is important

Appreciate if you could make your mind to try to stop the trucks and slow moving heavy vehicles driving on the right side of the road and education to drive on left side making fast moving overtakes not to drive zigzag .
Also instead of catching two wheels for pollution check it's better you concentrate on heavy vehicles which for sure polute a lot without proper pollution checks.... At least some good steps to save environment.

While appreciating the police departments efforts to implement traffic rules, I wonder why those rules don't apply to buses and slow moving vehicles plying on the fast lane and why bikers aren't made to ply on the left lane. They are all over the road.

There shouldn't be different rules for different people. Please Sir, you are doing a great job but you have to ensure your department is not a biased one.

Hawkers should be removed at all places except designated hawking places. Not only they block valuable parking space and obstruct traffic, but more than that they breed corruption and many shady people cost and gather around them causing danger to public at large.

    Dear Sir,

On the very Nantoor junction, at the place where the bus-stop is cleared and a strip is added to widen the road, street-sellers have already settled their carts with fruits to sell. One will become two and then the entire strip will be covered by street vendors.

Please sir, stop this slot from being a mini-market.
