Mangalore, Mar 8: A lady and her daughter have been admitted to Wenlock Hospital after allegedly being beaten up by the police. The incident is said to have happened during the arrest of the lady’s husband Mohammad, in Suratkal.
Johra (38) and Bushra (19) are currently undergoing treatment for their injuries. They reside in Suratkal near the Mescom office.
The police came knocking at their home at midnight on Saturday but were denied entry by the family. On Sunday noon, the police came again and arrested Mohammed.
The women claim that they plead with the police not to arrest Mohammed as he is innocent and not involved in any criminal activities.
Johra said that when they were thus pleading with the police, they were beaten with ‘lathis’.
Bushra, who is a student, said that the police were not in a mood to listen to them.
Mohammed is in police custody on charges of assaulting an individual along with three others.
When Daijiworld contacted the Suratkal police station, Ramesh, sub-inspector, said “We have not assaulted the ladies and their allegations are incorrect. We had been to their home to arrest Mohammad who is wanted in an assault case. In fact, the women interfered while we were doing our duty and we had to restrain them. It was not an assault of any kind.”
Ali Hasan, secretary, Muslim central committee, condemned the incident and urged the police to take strict action against the personnel who harassed the ladies.
