Mangalore, Mar. 23: The district administration on Monday March 23 removed banners put up for a ‘Nagamandala’ near Bejai as it is a violation of the election code of conduct. But the locals were irked by this.

The banners were by the road side in Bejai area and were about the Nagamandala which began on Monday at the Guru Vaidyanatha Chamundeswari Temple in Bejai-Kapikad.

The people who gathered there while the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) workers were removing the banners, staged a protest and blocked the road for a few minutes. Later, the police arrested those who had blocked the road.

Women protesters said that the district administration is targeting only the religious programmes of the Hindus. They claimed that the election code applies to political and election-related banners.

Shashidhar Hegde, former mayor, who is the president of the Nagamandala committee, said that the removal of banners was not in good taste as these were not intended for the election.

The arrested people were later released by the police.

The MCC officer leading the removal of banners said that this was an order by the deputy commissioner (DC).

I think this is absurd, how would Nagamandala banners influence/affect the elections. The District administration should rather focus on core issues like providing better roads and infrastructure...Lets not mix Religion with Politics.Nagamandala is an auspicious event for Hindus and it should not be disrupted in any way...It would be wise for the district admin to stay from such actions or might result in communal forces striking back again...

Dear Ponnuraj you have done a excellent job. Pls do not allow any banners and don't allow any bundh and procession in future. If party does not listen then issue orders for shoot at sight. If one man killed by police shooting then nobody will organize any procession or public rallies,bunds.etc. Also dont allow any public addressing the spiritual address which create communal harmony in our community

The Election Commissions order with respect to religious events cut-outs, banners, etc. removal is not a supportive one. If they view that any publicity articles of religious event is influential one, & also the religious commonly used color is influential one, it only impresses that wrong calculations of EC.

Can EC ban people wearing Saffron-Green-White colour sarees or shirts, as they are used by Hindus-Muslims-Jains respectively ? Can they ban people wearing Saffron-Black-Blue dothies as they are used by Shabarimala piligrims ? Such steps of EC may only end up with drawing up of hatred, distress by common public. It is high time for EC to think & control only publicity which is directly linked to political canvasing, & not religious related events.

I dont say its a good work by the DC. D.C should have asked the temple administration to remove this banner instead sending Muncipal administration workers and creating a scene there and a protest. My muslim brothers whoever commenting on this issue should also think that if similar banner for the Urus or some other religious functions would have been removed they would have been protested in the same manner.

No doubt such incidence will affect religious sentiment, but banner menace has grown out of proportion now a days and also created lot of problimes like traffic, pollution problems etc. Therefore, there is need for strict policy guidelines on banners by local authorities. sometime, such banners are utilised for adviertiesment by commercial companies free of cost thereby local authorites loose thier eligible revenue.

Any religion should not be politicised. Nagamandala is a very ancient & popular festival where other believers too participate. Why deface the city with so many posters? Sending personal invitations to VIPs & giving a press release for general public is more than enough. After all it is a holy invite & not any political gimmick where pseudo crowd is hired.

I have seen so many of Muslims and Christian familiy offerings on Naga Panchami. This is absolute nonsense of authorities connecting this ritual to election. Nagamandala DOES NOT belongs to any parties, Rama Sene, Bheema Sene, Shiva Sena, or any Vedikes Vijay, Udupi

This is nothing but the political stunt to show the general public that, the administration is targeting only one religion. Dear brothers and sisters don't get tricked by these politicians. HI to all ,  I m not against anyone or anybody's banners.. its better no banners on public place like on roads .Any religious banners to be put inside the premises. And one more suggestion is that no movie posters or banners put on the roads or on the walls ..and protesting on roads should be banned even taking rallys of any religions to be banned .Our religion should be kept in our heart not on the roads.

Right thing... Remove all Banners including advertisements also. They became a big disturbance. Once while going in a bus I saw an advt of L&T Cement continuously for half a furlong on walls. If some people came to visit our place they have to see these advertisements only.

They have to think that this is India. Our beautiful places, heritage all were masked by these nuisance... Banners, Cut-outs, Advertisements... There are a lot of other media like TV, Newspapers, Magazines, Internet to display Advertisements... Then why these on roads. First of all it is difficult to manage roads and traffic. These nuisances in between... Dear Ponnuraj, Many thanks to you if you remove them all....

The district administration is stepping the wrong line in this regard even though the banners/posters are disconfiguring the city's beauty. You wont find any place where in a single pole or tree without these 'Langoti's' either commericial or religious. The district administration or Mangalore Muncipality should bring in strict rules to control this menace. They should designate particular area's for display of the banners and they should charge fees for the same like any other media. Further the banners should be displayed only for a particular time span may be not exceeding 10 days. I know this is very difficult task but this is not impossible.

Not good at all. If it is a religious program and the intentions of the organizers were really non-political, the actions of MCC is highly objectionable. Election code of conduct applies to political parties and political activities, not for these kinds of religious programs. The Constitution of India preserves the right of every citizen of India to practice his religion. I am completely with Hindus for a peaceful protest.
