Sri Lanka: 15 killed in shootout between troops and Islamist militants

Colombo, Apr 27 (IANS): Fifteen bodies were recovered after a fierce gun battle between Sri Lankan forces and an armed group near Batticaloa, police said on Saturday.

Officers acting on a tip-off had launched a raid on Friday night in Ampara Sainthamaruthu and the armed group set off an explosion which triggered the gun battle, the BBC reported.

When troops moved in after dawn on Saturday, they found the bodies of 15 people.

In another raid in the same town, the police found Islamic State (IS) flags, 150 sticks of gelignite, thousands of steel pellets and a drone camera, a military spokesman said.

On Friday, 10 people were arrested from across the country bringing the number detained since the Easter Sunday bombings to 80.

Sunday's explosions killed 253 people and injured over 500 in one of the bloodiest days in Sri Lanka since the civil was ended a decade ago.

Sri Lankan forces with foreign intelligence forces must wipe out Islamic terrorists for good. Even they must find out foreign supporters of terrorists and held accountable for the barbaric bombings on Easter Sunday.

    My dear shoaib sheikh,
For any religion to think it is "peaceful", then by logic it should have also thought about violence, to compare its "peace" with the potential violence that it could generate...nothing exists in a vacuum, dear...so if you say it is a peaceful religion you are comparing its present day peacefulness to what kind of benchmark? Peace or violence connot be an absolute ..I hope have made myself clear. ..when u say something is dark for example, you are consciously or subconsciously comparing it to something lighter, even if that object is nowhere close by.

Each of the bombers had the support of a family, a community, friends and financiers. Sri Lanka has an opportunity of rounding up the family and friends of each of these persons and eliminate them.

It is yet to be seen if Sri Lanka will act effectively like Israel ,or allow the cancer to grow .

With out support from the your community it is not possible to eradicate this menance.
The concept of jihadi is very dangerous to entire world. Why there is no terrorism in other faith ? Jesus said Iam the way truth and Life. He called his followers as light and salt of the Earth.

Battikalova region is a strong hold of LTTE. It's the time to take rebirth of Prabhaker behind ISIS flag which might have taken for granted of recent bombings.

LTTE fought mainly on linguistic basis, whose members were both Hindus & Christians and Tamil Muslims were purposefully kept out of this group. The present attack is mainly on religious basis by the Islamist group.

I do agree that all Muslims are not bad. And also I agree that terrorism can not be linked to any religion.

But going by the facts, most of the terrorist problems have origins to only one religion, across the globe, except for some scattered incidences like the one in Christchurch. There should be something wrong in the religion, or the book, or the interpretations of the book or the basic religious education provided!

Chowkidar, Yes all Muslims are not bad and you cannot link terrorism with any religion as we don't link Mecca masjid blast and few blast with Hindu religion(done by so called saviors of Hindu religion).

There is nothing wrong with Islam and Qur'an, Yes I agree that some Muslims become terrorist and but those acts of these people I don't think its terrorizing but its cowardly act done by them in the name of Religion. Islam came as a religion of PEACE and its the religion of PEACE.
If Islam would have taught violence then we would have not spared any crusaders when we conquered Al Quds.
