Udupi, May 21: The onset of the monsoon in the coastal district heralded by heavy rains and high velocity gales on the nights of Monday May 18, 19  and 20, has caused widespread damage to public and private property across the district.

Several electric poles were damaged by the winds in Ucchila, near here, on Tuesday night.  Personnel of the public utility agencies were found busy restoring the severed electric cables and the snapped communication network.

A palm tree fell on the house belonging to Wilma Fernandes of Shirva near here on Tuesday night partially damaging her house and causing major losses.

The district administration has been busy assessing the rain losses in different locations across the region.

The heavy rains and gales have made the Arabian Sea rough, preventing local fishermen from venturing into the sea. The rains, however, have boosted the spirits of local farmers, causing them to begin early preparations to undertake agricultural activities.
