NRIs to get Aadhaar card without waiting for 180 days

New Delhi, Jul 5 (IANS): Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) having Indian passports can now get Aadhaar card without waiting for 180 days, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.

As of now, the NRIs get Aadhaar card after staying in India for a minimum of 180 days.

"I propose to consider issuing Aadhaar card for NRIs with Indian passports after their arrival in India without waiting for 180 days," Sitharaman told Parliament while presenting the Budget 2019.

According to the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, an NRI who has resided in India for 182 days or more in 12 months and with an Indian address could apply for Aadhaar.

However, as per the Aadhaar Act, NRIs are fully exempt from producing Aadhaar for any verification.

The Minister said the government also intended to provide better and more accessible public services to Indians abroad by opening embassies in more countries.

Four embassies were proposed to open this year.

Five embassies opened in Rwanda, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Republic of Guinea and Burkina Faso last year.

"To give further impetus to India's growing influence and leadership in the international community, the government decided to open Indian Embassies and High Commissions abroad in countries where India does not have a Resident Diplomatic Mission as yet. In 2018, the government approved opening of 18 new Indian Diplomatic missions in Africa," Sitharaman said.

The government is developing 17 iconic tourism sites into world class tourist destinations and to serve as a model for other tourism sites.

Most of NRI have a valid passport, Aadhaar Card, Pan Card, Voters ID, Driving Licence and Ration card.

    I would like to clarify from the government of India and the External Affairs Ministry, among all the official documents mentioned above;
    1. Which document is the most valuable for NRI in India, who can get his work done back home hassle-free running without a pillar to post?
    2. Why only in India we have multiple identifications need to carry, while the system largely implemented copying from the developed world?
    3. Why the Central government makes Indian nationals mandatory of compulsory registration with private companies with services they provide against the ruling of the Supreme Court?
    4. Why the Aadhaar Bill is passed in hassle by PM Modi's government without considering 'Data Protection law'?
    5. How does the user will be protected from identity theft from the government database from hackers and financial fraud?
    6. Why the Central government scarp all the cards into one single card like Untied States 'Social Security card'?
    7. Is the goverment of India is going to share the personal data of Indian citizen with another country without his knowledge?
    8. In nationality determination processes, the burden of proof should lie with the State and not with the individual. Why in Assam alone 40 lakh people left stateless despite staying in India for more than 50 years now being subject to discriminative and arbitrary nature of the current legal system?

    Jossey Sir,

Passport, Driving License, & Voter ID are issued separately in USA.... other ( more ? ) developed countries, I don't know...

Your suggestion is good, if all 3 are in one card / book it is more convenient...let's start this experiment in India...

    ...Tak...Takk...

    Jossey,

Bio-metric passport is a book & not a card. It’s implemented in western countries. Other countries, the implementation has been made mandatory in war torn countries & countries with high crime rate like Nigeria, Egypt & our neighboring country. In India it’s being issued to diplomats.
Then there is something called “Real ID”. Earlier, a person with a driving license could fly domestic in US. But starting October 2020, one needs Real ID which is driving license & passport for domestic travel. Immigrants without passport & visa can get driving license, but not “Real ID”.
