Mangalore: City's First Flyover Near Derebail to be Ready in June 09

Mangalore: City's First Flyover Near Derebail to be Ready in June 09
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RD/CN)

Mangalore, May 25: The flyover at Kuntikana - Derebail, at the intersection of National Highway (NH) 17 and Bajpe Airport Road here, will be open for traffic within the next fortnight. This will make it the first flyover in the city.

The construction of this fly-over is in its final stages and once it is functional, it is expected to help ease the road blocks at Kuntikan junction would be eased considerably.  Besides, it would facilitate smooth traffic on NH 17.  The city buses and general traffic heading towards Derebail–Kavoor can proceed without interruption.

The work on a flyover that is coming up at Kottara junction, a few kilometres away from Kuntikan, will be quickened.

Meanwhile, work on the B C Road flyover in Bantwal taluk still has not reached the final stage.  The traffic bottlenecks here on the Mangalore–Bangalore NH 48 is the order of the day.

The work on other flyovers at Suratkal and Kuloor on NH 17 are on the fast track while the execution of four lane work and subsequent construction of flyover at Nantoor–Bikarnakatte was hampered owing to delays on the land acquisition process.

Here, 13 cases were filed in this regard at the local court of which 11 were settled recently.  Hence, it has empowered NH authorities to go ahead with further works along this stretch of NH.

NH authorities are confident of expediting the completion of related works once the major flyovers on NH are opened for traffic, as the conversion works of four lanes is nearing completion.

NH authorities expect to complete the four lane work from B C Road to NITK, Suratkal, by December 09.

This is what we get the ultimate result by the public work department because they don't have skilled team they just do without proper project management, Experience, methodology, value construction. They just appoint Govt Engineer just in money and not in knowledge. All projects done by the department is done knowingly and acting that they are unaware about it just because we Mangalorian are very silent because we just never ever protest for the REAL ONE & we forget bya day or two....This is just any example..but just see the concrete road designed and supervised throughout dakshina Kannada.methodology is completely nil here ..(Without proper drainage channel facility done they first just concreted the road without proper gradient provided all water rushes inside the neighboring compound rather than flowing in storm water drain and by OUR luck all Minister come and check take photos& publish in news paper and our respective all D.C's has checked and approved all the work till periodically..).then What more we can say more on this topic. So we just pay Tax and say INDIA IS GREAT.because we in karnataka pay highest tax rather than other state.and the Govt release all our paid tax amount in ALL these type of schemes

Mr.Khan india is democracy. criticising is beauty of democracy. nothing wrong in giving opinion. offcourse flyover design looks outdated. This is public money, it should be spent properly. Look at the flyovers of middle east or far eastern countries. why can''t we build better than them? & also 5th July sunday times has given reasons of race attack against Indians in Australia. Millions of people reading that article. We can not escape from truth. "TRUTH IS ALWAYS BITTER"

I am exteremely sorry to say about our construction work. I am not blaming anyone else here instead of improving ourselves. We all knew that how much will sanctioned by the government of Karnataka and how much will come to the project. We all think about our countrys development instead of our selves.

    Sun, May 31 2009

The technology which was/is used to build this bridge at the Kuntikan Junction is outdated even as per INDIAN standards, the Lalbagh flyover in Bombay which was built with this kind of technology was recently pulled down to make way for a more modern 4 lane flyover,

Even way back in 80s we were ashamed to see the kind of flyover construction going on in Bombay. Right now things are much better, and most, if not all the flyovers which are built in Bombay are more or less of international standards, and this was made possible because during the 90s the building codes to build bridges/flyover was amended.

However even in those days L & T had built a masterpiece at the EVERARD NAGAR junction, this goes to show that if a good consultant and contractor/builder is selected good flyovers/bridges can be built. The objective of building a flyover is not only to have the traffic ply over it, but to have the flyover seamlessly merge with the surrounding landscape, so that it doesnt look like an eyesore. Good design & construction does not mean expensive, I am sure the L & T or J Kumar Constructions who are building flyovers all over Bombay/INDIA would have done a better & faster job for the same money. I dont think IRCON being a public sector entity has the same levels of motivation and enthusiasm as Larsen & Toubro to be proud of what they have put up. I dont think anybody should feel offended if one seeks to have better roads/bridges/flyovers.

One of the indicators to a well built bridge is that the interconnecting spans should seamlessly merge with each other to form a single shape both at the road level as well as at the bottom of the girders as well. Being nationalistic or regionlist should not mean that one should accept mediocrity or sub standard products. Hold people accountable to give you a good product, since it is your own/tax payers money !!!!!

I really agree with most of the comments saying that flyovers of mangalore are not up to the standard. Lets not compare the flyovers of Manglore with the ones in Gulf thats too far. Just lets compare them with Mumbai or Bangalore then we know the actual difference.

Only building anything does not work but it should be up to a certain standard. I am optimistic that the look of our flyovers will be better once fully completed and high priority is given towards safety. My only advise too all who comment here is lets wait and watch untill the final touch.

Flyovers in foreign countries are constructed by qualified engineers but in India, without the political knowledge of politicians no flyover can be built. Engineers are just puppets in front of bureaucrats and politicians. There are several such constructions called magic box in the capital city Bangalore also. Hence one can expect only political flyover and not a quality flyover, kindly bear with them.

Thanks to former transport minister Muniyappa the first flyover of Mangalore is getting ready. Whether Muniyappa is going to retain his ministry or not will be known only tomorrow (Tuesday). Request Mangaloreans to note that this is neither Mangalore Corporation nor Karnataka State project. It is a project taken up by NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) under Port Connectivity Project. I have walked on the mini flyover infront of NITK. The work is bad and finishing is uneven between concrete and tar junction. Trucks and buses plying over this flyover generate such a loud voice when they touch concrete-tar junction. The flyover has already developed so many cracks. Hope it will last four another five years! Kuntikana flyover work is far better compared to NITK mini flyover. It will definitely last for another 50 years. Two more flyover at Kottarachowki & Surathkal are also at finishing stages. Hope our new central minister M Veerappa Moily, local MPs and state leaders will apply enough pressure on transport ministry of central government for early completion of remaining flyovers at Baikampady, Kuloor, Nanthoor-Bikarnakatte, BC Road and completion of Nathoor-Pumpwell-BC Road stretch. My other worry is about Kundapur-Surathkal, Pumpwell-Talapady fourlaning of work that would be taken up as separate project. Union government is thinking of cost reduction by reducing the number of flyovers & bridges in this stretch. My worry is that reduction of number of flyover may lead to traffic congestion and reduction of bridges may lead to flooding. Early completion of NH-17 four-laning work is more important for neighbouring Keralaites to get connectivity with Mumbai and further north but cost reduction may put Canaraites in problems. Hope the new government will plan this work in a people friendly way.

Mr Chongu, you seem to be a very sour loser. As you rightly said that for people like you podimeene gathi, because it seems to me that you are spending a better part of your life being jealous and sulking at the progress and success of others. Just visit the restaurants and pubs in Mangalore and you will find most of them full with local families who live and work in India itself. See them splashing money around. I don''t think that we people working in the gulf can afford their life style. The prices of fish and mutton have gone up not because of people from the gulf but because of the demand from the ever growing middle class in India. India is progressing, and so instead of sulking and finding fault with people from the gulf try to achieve something for yourself.

Mr Rakesh Poonja, the idea is not to unnecessarily find fault, but create awareness on corruption. You cannot blame the contractor if he delivers a substandard product, because he has to fill in the pockets of corrupt politicans and officials. Our engineers and contractors too can build the best infrastructure, if they are allowed to. I live very close by to this flyover and whenever i have been down in Mangalore i have seen the pace at which the work has been progressing and the alternatives being provided for the traffic to flow. Believe me it is pathetic. During my last visit when i asked one of the residents as to when the flyover would be completed, he jokingly said that he expected it to be completed after his grandson was born. For the people living in that neighbourhood it has been hell for the last 3 years with the amount of dust around. Yes we live in Dubai and we are seeing the quality of the floyovers and roads here. Most of the engineers and labour is from India, and therefore having seen such good quality built by our won people we expect the same in our country. We too budget, do project studies and the money is rightly allocated, but the end product is shabby because half the money allocated gets siphoned off. That is where the problem lies.

I have lived in Mangalore for 33 years and in the UK for 10 years. I am pleased to know that the flyover is almost complete although it will take a few months to give the finishing touches . I am optimistic the look will be better once fully completed. India has been going through lots of changes in the past 10 years por so...something that never happened in the 40 years prior to that. In a country like ours which is chaotic...(in a nice way) and riddled by other problems things do take time and the completion of this stretch into 4 lane has been a perfect example. Coordinating work like shifting of pipelines ,illegal connectons ,land aquisitiosn have all delayed the problem but I am hopeful things will improve in future as people are beginig to see changes and that will motivate others. Rather than putting down others I would give all encouragement for those involved to take up further works ,true in a set up like ours there will be setbacks but we will get there. Here in the UK they have an excellent road network, safety in given priority but of late I have seen that roads are not being repaired and are developing potholes ...looks like recession is taking its first toll. I am just wondering if the trend is reversing !

Mr Chongu, don''t say that flyovers in India should not be compared to the ones in the west. Why should they not be?. Are our engineers idiots? Are they less intelligent or less qualified than the foreigners?. Why should one accept sub standard quality of infrastructure?.

Don''t ask a stupid question as to what have you contributed to the welfare of India. Please check with the Reserve bank of India and the Finance ministry to find out the amount of foreign exchange that flows from the Gulf countries into the Indian coffers. It is better that you keep your ignorance to yourself.

What a flyover. Its taken donkeys years to finish and what we see is interlocks on the flyover. Are we constructing flyovers or flying over all safety regulations?

Before planning such big projects, My sincere request to Corporation Authorities to depute your consultants/architects(not ministers) to developed countries for viewing the sample of similar projects at least for a week. So that we can avoid this type of substandard construction. I am surprised how the consultants have approved this project. Consultants certificates have to be seriously veified by concerned authorities.

Most of the commentators are from Gulf/western countries. Don''t compare flyovers from other countries. Whatever is done it''s upto their mark. What you people are contributed to the welfare of India. Even you are transferring money from Havala/Hundi. Very sad really.
