Mangalore: Coastal Security Force equipped with Speed Boat

Mangalore, May 27: The lack of basic facilities that had been plaguing the Coastal Security Force functioning, promises to be a thing of the past, with the addition of a new speed boat to enable the Force to affectively face the security threats across the length of the coast with more efficient surveillance and improved operational capability, on Wednesday, May 27.
The speed boat with a capacity of five tonnes with a speed of 35 knots per hour, costing Rs 1,05,00,000, was inaugurated on NMPT berth in Panambur by Inspector General of Police, western range, Gopal Hosur.
Inaugurating the boat, Gopal Hosur said, the coastal security has been given more importance after the tragic incidents of 26/11. Providing security at the coast is the need of hour and the addition of the new speed boat will give additional teeth to the coastal security police in providing security and bringing down criminal activities, he added.
He also said that the force will have two out posts, one in Mangalore and the other at Udupi, with two separate units of policemen, each with a contingent of 100 policemen each. The upgraded outposts will start functioning shortly. The training, recruitment and other related tasks have been completed, he said.
Hosur revealed that 30 out posts will be added in the coastal line to control the underground activities, in addition to other illegal activities.
Superintendent of police of Coastal Security Force, H R Bhagawan Das said, the speed boat will be used for the surveillance and other operations related to the coastal security.
Giving the details about the boat, he said, this double engine boat has been built, by making use of glass reinforced plastic and that it will not sink even when filled with water to the brim. It has the capacity to carry 14 persons. The boat also has been equipped with important tools like life jackets, fire extinguishers etc. The boat will be operational in the coastal area up to 40 knots from the sea shore, he added.
The Coastal Security Force police team was formed to exercise control over the coastal area and to check illegal activities. But lack of infrastructure and the shortage of boats and vehicles had hampered the working of the Force.
Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, Superintendent of police, Dakshina Kannada, in charge commandant Ajay Kumar Mudgal and other officials were also present.
