Kuwait: The Centurion – Fitting Tribute to St Paul

Media Release

One is faith; one is hope and the greatest GIFT of all this is LOVE…
(1 Corinthians 13:13).

Kuwait, Jun 4: These are the words of St. Paul, the man who once lived as an imposter, arresting and killing Christians everywhere he went, prohibiting the proclamation of the name of Jesus.

What he never knew coming his way was the amazing call of Jesus, on his way to Damascus, not knowing that God would one day bestow on him his power to bring forth his message of love, peace and comfort to all peoples of the world.

The musical, The Centurion, depicting the life of St Paul was one of the fitting way of paying tribute to this powerful Saint who changed the lives of many with his life and teachings that had many scholars bewildered at the way he delivered the gospel of Christ to all.

The Centurion was held on May15 and 16, 2009 at the IEAS Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Salmiya and on May 22 and 23, 2009 at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait City as part of the Jubilee celebration of the 2000th birth anniversary of the saint declared by the Pope Benedict XVI from June 2008 - 2009. The musical script was written by Peter Tassi and John Cope, Canada.

The play was ably coordinated by Fr Felix Mellawarachchy SDB and Fr Lionel Braganza SDB with the support and encouragement of, Msgr Camillo Ballin, Bishop of the Vicariate of Kuwait, to bring alive the letters of St Paul. The director of the play, Tony Gonsalves, has successfully driven home the message of the play, right into the spirits, minds and hearts of all who were in attendance, with some scintillating music arranged by Blossom Pereira, the musical director. The sound and lighting was created by Anand – “Illumination”and his dedicated team. The spectacular moments of the event were captured by Winston Alphonso, the ace photographer and Alban D'Souza, the creative videographer. The costumes were arranged and designed by  Arlette and   Belinda, teachers of IEAS, Don Bosco. A special word of thanks goes out to Fr Melvin OCD who was a silent appreciation for all that was being planned.

The entire musical left the audience mesmerized at the performance put up by the actors and dancers, 75 in number ranging from tiny tots, students working youth to parents, who voluntarily dedicated their time to showcase their hidden talents, that were never noticeable before to the community. They truly deserve credit and acknowledgment for the effort put in over the last 4 months. The play not only speaks of the life of St. Paul, but also gives an opportunity to ponder and understand God's way which seems so mysterious and confusing in our present lives.
