    What I understand a passenger can carry any amount of money provided, he declares it before the authorities. There is a exemption for up to USD 5,000.00 which is approximately Rs.3.4 lakhs. However, it is not CISF job to find out. This is a silly matter to report as news.

    He shouldn't have stuffed the cash in his underwear, making the customs officials suspect him for money laundering. Meanwhile, you can deposit cash into an Indian account if it is such a small amount. Shame on media to make this a headline, Gentleman was carrying some money home for vacation.

    Rs. 4 lakh is nothing if you come to dxb for shopping or long term visit. Here just coffee at fuel station starts from Rs. 100.

    To spend in India, we usually utilize our Indian currency from bank source. Of course some foreign currency we may carry when we travel abroad where there is no value for Indian Rs.
    Here the person who was taking foreign currency back to the tune of 4 lac rupees raises some legal question. Why he did not declare at the customs while coming to the country. May he was not aware of the rules or he had his own scheme. I too usually carry some KD currency but not equivalent in lac

    If someone is coming from abroad, he can bring foreign currency worth USD 5000/ and if it is above 5000 he/she need to declare.
    I am working in abroad, and if I bring FC worth USD 5000/= and after spending part of it in India if I take it back, what is the crime. In fact after going back to Gulf one need money to survive as he/she will not get the salary soon after he arrives.
    Can someone put some light on my query.

    @Hanif.

    Undeclared currency limit is USD.5,000/=

    However one can bring in much larger amounts, but have to declare at the airport.

    Declaring huge sums of Foreign currency, will also help one, to take back to any country, the same amount or lesser after spending , investing, without any legal issues.

    Jai Hind!!!!
