Mangalore, Jun 17: The ministers in the union cabinet wasted no time in paying a visit to their constituency or hometown soon after taking oath! It was a grand welcome for the leaders in their hometowns with celebrations all around.
But Veerappa Moily, who hails from Karkala, elected from Chickballapur, seems to have forgotten his native place as he is yet to make an appearance there after being given a cabinet berth.
The words which he pronounced while taking the oath, “I Moodbidri Veerappa Moily…” had made the residents of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district proud to proclaim that he is from their own district.
Strangely, Moily has visited his Chickballapur constituency thrice and was also felicitated by local organizations. However, he hasn’t been able to find time from his ‘busy schedule’ to visit his hometown, giving rise to resentment among party activists there. Party factionism is also being blamed as a cause for this.
Ivan D’Souza, vice-president, District Congress Committee, denied that there was any such feeling among the cadre and added that they were in contact with Moily with regard to celebrating his home coming.
D’Souza said that due to special meetings and other engagements, he was unable to fix the date.
He further said that said that Moily’s homecoming would be at the end of the June, when he will be felicitated in a grand manner.
A member of the Congress party said, “As law minister the people of the state are more enthusiastic about on his works in various sections of law. Being a former chief minister he is familiar with the problems in the state as well as legal issues”.
“We are ready to welcome him in a grand manner, but the leaders in the district committee have not shown any enthusiasm”, said another worker, who preferred to stay anonymous.
Moily took oath on May 22, 2009, and on this day Congress activists in Moodbidri celebrated by bursting crackers and distributing sweets.
Veerappa Moily, a lawyer turned politician was chairman for the administrative reforms committee of India. He was also the state chief minister from 1992 to1994. He is also a novelist and has penned a work on the epic ‘Ramayana’ in five volumes known as the ‘Ramayana Mahanveshanam’.
It is common knowledge that Moily was eyeing the Mangalore Lok Sabha seat but through strong recommendations from local congress MLAs, and party workers, Poojary succeeded in getting the ticket.
The internal differences amongst the Congress leadership in the district could be the prime reason causing Moily to postpone his visit to his home district.
It is also being rumoured that Moily is not too keen on coming here anytime soon because he is grateful to the people of Chickballapur for having changed the course of his career. For without it, he would have been nowhere in the party.
