Mangalore: It’s Smooth Ride to Airport Down the Road Come September

Mangalore, Jul 7: The new integrated terminal building of the Mangalore Airport at Bajpe here is all set to be inaugurated in the first week of September. And now the two-way road via Kenjar connecting airport that reduces the distance to the airport by eight kilometres is almost ready and will be opened for traffic at the time of terminal’s inaugural.

The major works of the newly constructed road are almost finished with electrification works pending, which will render the roads more convenient. It is the state government’s project which has been implemented using the Asian Development Bank loan and the work contract was given to Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC). The new road, which was planned as a four-way, is now a two-way lane after innumerable controversies and alleged private excavations in hillock, where the road project was framed.

According to Syed Elyas Pasha, KUIDFC executive engineer the road will open for traffic from September after it is handed over to Airport Authority of India (AAI). The minor works related to the new road, which includes place markings on the road and power supply to the lights, are pending, added Pasha. The existing road via Dakkan Park will be used as an entry to airport, whereas the new road will be to exit from the airport, as per the sources in AAI. But nothing in this regard has been finalized as yet.

The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 8.89 crore that includes strengthening of the existing road of 1.25 kilometres which was under the supervision of public works department. These works apart, a new 875-metre long road from Kenjar village junction to new airport terminus too has been laid.

The project that was conceptualized two years ago is now finally ready. Initially, the project faced hurdles as far as acquisition of land was concerned with few landowners refusing to part with their land. After the issue was resolved, the KUIDFC took up the works of construction of the road.

Meanwhile, another interesting fact is that Mangalore City Corporation had begun road works from KPT circle to Maravoor bridge in the name of airport connectivity road. After finishing works on one-kilometre stretch, the work gained a sluggish pace and is yet to be completed though MCC has received both central and state government grants. The contractors have been blamed for the slow progress of work. Once the project is completed then the way to the airport is all smooth.

Well done at least in this later stage. Just compare with the Kozhikode Airport which commenced only few years back. Just compare the no. of flights flying internationally. compare the ticket fare. Compare the timings of flights to and from Doha. All very inconvenient. Many Mangaloreans are flying from Kozhikode to Doha because of big difference in fare and very inconvenient departure and arrival time. Do not disturb the passengers by exploiting the monopoly. The Airport Authority should look in to this as the Airport loosing a big revenue and it deverted to other Airports.

Hi everybody. Well well well, Mangalore, Kodial, Kudla, has been on the wheels of development after over three-four decades. The Port, Konkan Railway, Airport, Engineering College etc., were set up long long back. All these facilities should have been set up at least two decades back. Anyway better late than never.

Indeed ,Mangalore looks beautiful. A coastal town with plenty of resources ,unfortunately improperly managed by the greedy politicians. Most of us have left the town for greener pastures abroad, but Mangalore has definitley all the wealth when compared to the desert lands!. Well done , to all those who have worked for the new roads and the new terminal as well. Its time we appreciate our land than comparing it to the beautiful cities of the world!

Great work when compared to other parts of the city. India should aim for for better design, safety and coninuity of traffic flow at all time. I can see many important traffic issues are not addressed by looking at the pictures. Take help from other countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

At this time this road looks nice and would serve the propose it is built for. However there are few things i would like to mention 1)It is a two way road. No future trafic increases were taken into consideration at the time of building this road. 2) There is no service lane in this road. In case there is an accident entire stretch will be blocked. Come on this is an airport exit. People arriving from different part of the world after long journey may have to wait for hours before this road is cleared .A service lane would have helped police and ambulance to move faster and clear the road.

Yes Rolphy Almeida, if the curves are sloped outward instead inward, as it looks in the pics, the purpose is not served.Technically SUPERELEVATION,is tilting of the road to offset centripetal force. Here the force acts outward, so the slope to be inside.

We hope enough of concrete and steel gone in this road out of 8.89 crores. Some curves in the photograph look dangerous as someone already pointed out in his comments, that the slope given to the outer part of the curve instead of inner side. I urge Daiji world to check it out with a civil engineer as a part of public safety, perhaps it could be due to photographic angle. I also request the authorities to start Volvo bus service similar to Bangalore, to distant cities like Udupi, Kundapore, Karkal etc.

The new Mangalore airport road is beautiful and will time & distance to the new airport terminal. As far as Mr Salim, Saudi comments are concerned he should use the old road as he wants a flat track. I wonder how fast he wants people to drive to the airport. Nor does he have any idea of the South Kanara terrain which is 80% hilly. Please be positive Mr Salim. Yhanks to Daiji team for the superb pictures. The concrete roads look good to and I''m sure the authorities will also start landscaping to enhance the looks of this new road.

The approach road to new terminal resembles ghat section. There should have been a better planning to avoid hair pin turns on the newly built road. Further the approach road is too narrow and definitely this will cause lot of problems to vehicular movement. A case study for poor planning and excecution.

Mr Salim Saudi is commenting not knowing where exactly the airport is located. For his information this airport is located on a hill and that is the beauty of it. So there is no question of flat and straight road. And as for the question of driving safe and slow this applies to all places and roads and not just here.

Furthermore the work should be started in earnest to connect the airport to the Mangalore city centre for city dwellers and to the national highways for people comming in from Kerala and Udipi side. Congratulations to all the people who have made this possible irespective of their parties and political leanings. This proves that where there is a will, there is a way.

Awsome truely asome feeling.. Check out the entry to the airport , its a sought of Ghat Section Feeling, I just hope it is a one way road for entry and exit till the terminal. Also the authority should give importance for landscaping now and give a good finish to these roads with greenery around. Also care should be taken to avert landslide as it is excavated section of the cliff.Strong walls will do to cover  you also i guess.. Am sure once fully done the place will look beautifull

Now people will start still blaming the local and state leaders for killing the nature and destroying our Beutyful Mountain and trees. Don’t worry we make ourselves even to pay for the "prana" the air intake.

That is a progress in the right direction. Please make sure vehicle balance and prtoection measures for road curves are well planned and implemented.

Why are you worried Naveen sir? Look at the mud besides the road. It is going to slide and everything will be panic then. I hope the department is not rushing in setting up a road for the sake of setting.
