Beltangady, Jul 14: A deadly chemical, used between the year 1980 and 2000 in plantations of Kerala and coastal Karnataka as an effective insecticide-cum-acaricide, has left telling tales of its strong after-effects in places wherever it was used. Out of a total population of about 8,000 in Kokkada, Patrame and Nidle villages of Beltangady taluk, nearly a thousand suffer from mental and physical disorders, handicaps of various degrees, blood and other cancers, heart diseases, dumbness, blindness, deafness etc. The insecticide has also been credited with rendering many women unable to conceive. Officially, two deaths have occurred during the last some years because of the side affects of endosulfan while unofficially, the figure easily crosses 60.

For controlling the insect called 'T-mosquito' that had been inflicting heavy damage to the cashew plantations, Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation had hired helicopters to spray endosulfan over 800 acres of its cashew plantations at the rate of twice yearly, for 20 years in this taluk. By the year 1997, ill-effects of endosulfan use started to surface. Children with bloated skulls, handicaps and problems never seen by the people there, were born. People suffered from skin diseases, cardiac complications, etc. After people launched an agitation against the use of endosulfan, its use was stopped after the year 2,000.

Workers who used to spray this chemical, those who were living there, cattle etc., started to suffer from untold miseries after the spraying of endosulfan was stopped. Endosulfan had deeply embedded into the soil, water, grass and other vegetation here by then and through them, it entered the systems of the human beings and animals. When people discarded empty endusulfan cans into the rivers, thousands of fishes died. People who ate these fishes became sick. Cows which grazed the grass either stopped becoming pregnant or died.

A protracted struggle undertaken by the people in Kerala for getting compensation for endosulfan after-effects, resulted in the government there extending various benefits to them. However, in Karnataka, the government has turned a blind eye to their sufferings. Departments have been shifting the onus on one another, even though the politicians had taken a decision to compensate for the losses earlier. The fact that Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation that was under the department of horticulture was shifted to forest department, complicated the problem further. The hope of these people is fading and many deem that committing suicide would be the only way to free themselves of this never-ending agony. Unless the peoples' representatives make a determined bid to provide some solace to the affected people, the families that have been somehow limping along with a glimmer of hope that the government will extend some assistance to them, might get disheartened. Their needs are genuine and the government should remember that the killer chemical had been sprayed by them on the people and their vegetation.

Endosulfan has been banned in many countries including Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, Sweden, England, Germany, Denmark, Singapore, Bangladesh, Japan, Indonasia etc. In India however, the decision has been put on hold, because of contradictory reports the investigating scientists had submitted on the ill-affects of endosulfan in the past.

The affected families have seen deaths, have shed tears for their children who were born with various deformities, many of whom did not grow up with age and remained burdensome dependent on their poor parents.

The endosulfan-affected people demand not less than five lac rupees as compensation to the families which have lost their members to this deadly insecticide, waiver of their existing loans, sanction of fresh interest-free loans, a treatment centre-cum-medical camp at Kokkada to treat and take care of the affected people, development of villages, development of Kokkada hospital where the only doctor is overburdened, etc. The people here are hoping that the government will do something for them to cheer them up, after a long, painful and dark journey in life. Will the government act and keep up the promises it made in the past?

India has always been used as a lab mice, for experimentation.it is not only the polititicians who are responsible.it depends on us too.we only think and write about the problem in the computer bcoz we r in great luxury.it is time that we take some action and try to maintain a balanced society .

inform the politicians of the deformities in the affected areas and the polluted areas. later - relocate the politicians , and force them to use the affected water etc. multiply their pay by 10 times, under the condition that they have to use the affected water for them and their kin.

This is very sad. India has not embarked on developing environmental control programs. The fundamental problem is that no school in the southern India offering environmental engineering courses thus lack of knowledge of these chemicals and their harmful effects has entered into the food chain, and human and animal reproduction change. The local hundreds of schools have engaged in producing electronics and computer engineers to serve the rest of the developed countries, but have not recognized what is needed at home to serve the people to have a safe and quality life. Public safety has been completely ignored. Every year monsoon and heavy rains in Karnataka and Bombay expose the poor drainage and stranded vehicles with dangerous environmental conditions that is affecting the basic needs of people. Property developers simply ignore the drainage needs, and we witness 3 to 4 feet surging water levels in houses, transportations avenues, and roads and train tracks are impossible to operate. All these calamities are man made. Either there is no concept of public health and safety in India or our politicians and educators simply ignore the public health and safety. What is required is massive education of people on harmful chemicals that are being used in irrigation projects, cultivation, and foods and fruits and drainage issues. Environmental safety regulations must be enforced in all facets of food chain and construction projects. Local engineering schools shall introduce environmental engineering programs to produce environmental engineers all companies and firms must employ environmental engineers to protect the environment. Then only our pristine country can remain as pristine and people can enjoy the advances in life style.

This is a proof of lack of knowledge of our UNEDUCATED political machine. They even not read the effect of endosulfan to human body in their school days. Sorry, most of the politicions not even entered the school.

These are heartbreaking pictures. Some of these chemicals are banned in other countries, but freely used in third world countries, and the people suffer eternal sufferings. For the corporations, deforming lives are simply a joke.

Endosulfan can be used safely. The tragedy of abuse should not be an adverse reflection on this economical and versatile generic pesticide. A ban on one pesticide serves no safety objective because another toxin will replace it. The way forward is to promote the safe and judicious use of all pesticides.

Dear Daiji World Team: Thanks for exposing the plight of the innocent victims of Govt. of Karnataka''s abuse. Just waiting for some compensation from the Govt. is of no use. You have a strong patronage. Why not establish a Trust and collect monies from good samaratians, spread across the world and honestly use the same for the welfare of the affected, which may include setting up of health facilities, financial assistance to the needy and other services which are required by the needy. I read, so many laments and comments on the inefficiency of the Govt. and if they don''t do anything, why not someone who is clean and upright do something as suggested above? We believe in your credentials and we will contribute our mite without any questions asked. Please do something in the right direction and monies collected in the said Trust may be utilised elsewhere around the country, where ever there is a genuine need. Regards, Ramesh Krishnamurthy

Thanks to daijiworld for the images of the victims of Endosulfan pesticide of Belthangady. Shocked to see & hear their life stories...! These are the poorest of the poor people ultimately victims of this deadly pesticide Endosulfan. This deadly pesticide is bannned in all the advanced countries. I do not understand why our Govt. is keeping silence over the matter and not banning this deadly pesticide. Who is going to compensate these poor affected people? Whether our State or Central Govt. have given them any monetary compensation? These questions still lying unanswered..!

They are so many people suffering because of corrupted officials, corrupted government. See kerala how they are developing more faster than karnataka.

God save us from this politics. bribe has becoming the symbol of government officials. Good ..keep it up.. Nothing more can be expected from government officials

A very sad and unfortunate. The victims are poor. Fertiliser companies bribe the bureaucrats and politicians for buying their products and certify them as health friendly and safe to use. As long as corruption is there in our system, more such things would happen and culprits will go scot free and poor people have to pay a high price like this.

I am afraid, if we dont stop these injustice and corruption, God may come down on us heavily and if God decides some thing, no bureaucrat or politician shall have power to reverse it. Be truthful to yourself and act.

Thanks Daiji for bringing out the plight of the affected along with heartbreaking images. May god bless these innocent victims to bear thier life long pain and trauma, especially my heartbroke when i was viewing the image of the ladys'' with thier boys in thier arm. Having felt n said this my question is "Why was a pesticide as dangerous as Endosulfan which is a banned drug in many developed countries used in our country? Was it just to make the rich more richer?

Who are the people benefitted out of the cashew exports? Is it the poor who get Peanuts for Cashewnuts or the wealthy exporters who earn in millions and are the most benefitted ones at the cost of these affected people. At thier corresponding association meetings we see a lot of wealthy exporters and cashew factory owners driving thier SUV''s with pride about the businesses thier hold and what a party they hold at the cost of these fragile innocents. Come on KCMA,KCDCA wake up from your deep slumber and do something for humanity. Enough of amassing wealth and building huge mansions, act before these innocents (literally skeltons as i see them in the images)haunt you in mansions. Act with humanly love, be responsible, take responsibilty for the act because somewhere somehow you guys are responsible for such a lethal pesticide to be used and for the innocents to be victims. It does not take long for the creator to show his anger and you never know it could be you?

Scientists testing Chemical no use do something for the affected people of the village. Use your brains in saving the people.Think if your children were affected, i think you would have done some research on that. Coming to the government, we arer electing a useless government, if they can''t save the lives or compensate on their lives its a waste.

Government officials to do their work for which they are paid are asking for bribe. We cannot complaint against this as our work will be held and we don''t have proof or even if we prove we will not have tiem to run behind that as case will be pushed for further date.

Advanced countries have banned of using such a dreadful chemical whereas our Government has blindly permitted based on contradictory reports from scientists. Alas the end result is death, childrens taking birth with deformities and thereafter sufferings through out life for childrens and parents. I appeal concerned authorities to wake up and take immediate action to ban using endosulfan and likewise chemicals to safeguard our childrens and citizens.

These are the results faced by using unprofessional cheap pest control methods. If the pest control treatment is done in the right method by using right insecticide/safety procedures we will not face all these problems. however this will cost money. Who is ready to pay more.

Being in this profession for the past 20 yrs even the educated are ready to compromise on all the safety measures when somebody offers them same treatment for less money without understanding the consequences. For european countries we are still a TCN to dump expired/outdated insecticides.

So sad to see these pictures of children and people who are suffering and my sympathies go to them. I strongly condemn the callous act of KCDC of spraying the Endosulfan when it was known from earlier experiences elsewhere that it would have side effects. I fully second the comments of Jawahar D`Souza of Doha and Jenifer of Mangalore in this respect, and call upon the Karnataka Government to institute an immediate enquiry into the matter and adequately compensate to all those families that have suffered.
