DRI Officials Net Currency,Saffron Smugglers at Bajpe Airport

Mangalore, Jul 16: On the basis of credible intelligence, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangalore have cracked two cases of international smuggling at the Bajpe Airport.
In the first major seizure of Iranian saffron at the city airport, the officers of DRI intercepted a passenger, Anwar K M of ‘Aslamse’, Nellikunnu, Kadappuram in Kasargod, who arrived by Air India Express Flight IX 812 from Dubai to Bajpe International Airport, Mangalore Thursday, July 16 early morning. On examination, his checked in baggage was found to contain saffron of Iranian origin weighing 10 kgs concealed in a cardboard carton box. The market value of the saffron seized is estimated at Rs 20 lakh.
In yet another smuggling case, the DRI officers in association with security agencies of the airport intercepted a passenger Aslam T M, Muttathodi of Kasargod, who attempted to travel by Air India Express Flight IX 811 from Bajpe International Airport, Mangalore to Dubai on Wednesday July 15 night. On examination, his checked in baggage contained Indian currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations of about Rs 9 lac cleverly concealed in packets of fancy and embroidery items. This is the third seizure of smuggling of Indian currency made by the DRI Zonal Unit of Bangalore in the last three months.
The officers of DRI have registered a case and the accused have been produced before the court. Further investigation is under progress
