Puttur: Shiradi Ghat: Milky, Foamy Streams provide Heartening Sight

Puttur, Aug 5: While every one wants to keep away from Shiradi Ghat stretch of the national highway 48 because of its wretched condition, several streams that dot the Shiradi Ghat section of the Western Ghats with their foamy, milky flow, entice the people with their natural flows, to come to them again and again. They remain silent, be in their full flow as long as rains come and wither as the rains recede, without caring as to whether any one has enjoyed their beauty or not. The tourists, who get to visit these streams once, are too mesmerized to leave the place and once they leave, they would be longing to come back and wait for the next monsoon season to arrive.

These streams have a life span of just one rainy season. Some of them jump from tremendous heights while other smoothly and gently navigate through the ups and downs to then suddenly rush down the smooth slopes. Many tourists have been on a visit to the Ghat section, to provide a treat of sorts to their eyes and store their memories in their minds and cameras.

Mother Nature is in her full glow here. The breath-taking beauty of the streams was caught on camera by our photo-journalist Arun Uppinangady.

What diffrentiates Daiji from other news channels / papers are the close and complete photos coupled with wide coverage of stories / incidents / occassions and news. As we all know a picture speaks more than 1000 words, Daiji is reaching far distances than other news agencies. Keep up the good work and all the best.

These are really great pics by Arun! Congrats buddy!! The beauty of the Western Ghats can be enjoyed and admired the most only during the monsoons. The white color of the foamy water meandering thru the rocky pathways formed by the natural flow of water over the years looks literally like milk. This reminds me of the saying that once "India was a country flowing with milk and honey".

These streams seem to be carrying pristine natural water coming from the top of the ghats getting filtered along the way naturally without a manmade water filter. The Shiradi and Charmadi forests are admirable and are real treasure troves of various flora and fauna and rare types of animals and bird species. Hope it is protected from the ruthless greed of humans in the race to make quick money.

I remember passing through Shiradi Ghats during the rains on way to Hassan and I have observed the beauty of the mini water-falls arising from the streams formed due to the rains as they have been well-depicted with their luster of milky-foamy sight in the photographs by Arun Uppinangady. It was nice of Arun to have captured this scenic pictures during the monsoon.

I also remember the mini-water falls at Khandala whenever I used to pass that side during the Monsoon on way to Pune both by bus or train. Similarly, On my picnic visit to Malshej Ghat near Kalyan, I had the privilege to see not only the mini-water falls, but also the clouds enveloping the place like fog resulting in inability to see ahead even at short distance. No wonder the song ''Aati hai kya Khandala'' involving actors Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherji is famous.

I think even Shiradi Ghats can be exploited for tourism and filming like Khandala Ghats by proper development of tourist spots. So also Agumbe and Charmadi Ghats can be developed in a similar manner.

I think if the roads on ghat section is given to private to maintain on contract for certain time to build & collect fees using electronic method for using it, These will be in good condition.

If only our authorities realize the importance of having safe and comfortable roadways in India, our tourism will bloom in a ten fold fashion. Tourism will bring so much of additional revenue to our economy and will create more employment, more business and more tourists. More hotels, motels, gas stations and much more for people to enjoy. Both Shiradi Ghats and Charmadi Ghats need careful planning so that a smooth road traffic will continue to flow and the people will enjoy the God given beauty of the scenic surroundings as well as mother nature.
