Bengaluru: Removal of references to Tipu Sultan from history textbooks - Minister seeks report

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SHP)

Bengaluru, Oct 29: State Education minister Suresh Kumar on Monday, October 29, wrote to managing director of Karnataka Textbook Society over submission of a report in three days regarding the proposal by BJP MLA Appachu Ranjan on the removal of references to Tipu Sultan from history textbooks.

Reportedly, Ranjan had written a letter to Kumar stating that the history books were glorifying Tipu Sultan as a freedom fighter and manipulating facts. Keeping this in mind, Kumar decided to hold a meeting with the History Textbook Drafting Committee and BJP MLA Ranjan. In the meeting, the MLA could discuss the necessity to keep lessons on Tipu Sultan or remove it.

Ranjan claimed that Tipu Sultan had no respect towards Kannada language and only believed in the conversion of people to strengthen his rule. "He changed names of places - Madikeri to Jafarabad and Mangaluru to Jalalabad. He looted temples and churches. In Kodagu he converted 30,000 Kodavas," Ranjan said.

However, responding to the attacks, a descendant of Tipu Sultan, Mohammad Shahid Alam believed that the MLA was tainting the ruler's name for vote bank politics.

Hats of Apachu Ranjan , Hats of Surekha Kumar , Hats of BJP Government .Good and bold decision . This is what we expect from BJP Government . Everyone are happy . Sidharamaiha is critizing the GOVT as expected but no use .Everyone knows whom he loves . That's why he lost in his own Constitution with margin of 35000 votes .The more he critizises the BJP the more advantage for BJP.

Why BJPIGS too much scared to Tipu Sultan???!!! If like that Ashoka, Shivaji etc killed lot of soldiers(hindu, muslim, Christians) to get power. By the way those who not part of Indian independence, write love letters & bootlickers of Britishers, should know Tipu is the first fighter who fought against British.

Read the history and understand what Tipu did with your ancestors , men women and children for 15years. Deemed as an extremely bad time in the history of Mangalorean Catholics.
.....its half knowledge on part of people like u which brings even more disgrace to the sacrifice and sufferings on part of our ancestors who died a death they did not deserve.

Deepak..you forgot how he killed canara catholics and hindus? How many temples and churches he destroyed? Just visit Kiren church during the feast where church honors hindu families who rescued the church from Tippu. Tippu was not freedom fighter. He was interested only in expanding his kingdom. Good that British killed him early otherwise you cannot imagine the pain our ancestors faced.

Tippu ma have been a geat figher or Warrior, but he was no way Freedom Fighter not Kannada Premi. He was just another tyrant. He fought against Tippu who were unseccefull in anexing Mysore through 3 Anglo-Mysore wars. Tippus aim was to save Mysore only , not Liberate India. For that he took help of the French who also unsuccefully wanted to colonize India against the British. Tippu prosecuted, tortured his own citizens especially Christians blaming them to be siding with the British. His attoricty and manslaughter against the Kodavas and Iyengars is well documented and is a fact. He wanted to make his kingdom a Islamic state then changing names of many cities . That is the Fact anyone accepts or not . Don't give this Tyrant who fought against British a freedom Fighter image . If children learn about the 4 Anglo Mysore Wars that's more than enough information on the history of Tippu. No need of Glorifying Tippu.

in the case of Tipu (it might be reveresed while reading, which stands true in his case) Sultan the history should be changed because he was one of the worst cruel persons who killed the people of his own state of Mysuru.
His father Hyder Ali was a big double game fellow who used to cross between British and other Indian Kings.

Instead of removing lessons or references from text books, unbiased facts need to be mentioned in history books. We see students read only about wars and achievements of Tipu while there is no mention of his religious persecution, forced conversions and atrocities against people of other religions. While both positive and negative aspects of Akbar, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb, etc. find mention in history, why not about Tipu Sultan?

Kamath baab show one king in the history who was benevolent, did not kill enemies or those whom he perceived to be threat to his Sovereignty and Kingdom. Every King, not just in India, across the world, used their power to kill people under various means. They were not governed by Constitution. King's religion was the religion of his Kingdom, his orders were the ultimate one and whoever betrayed, disobeyed often were killed. No king is an exception to this. Tipu did the same. He killed Mangalore Catholics because he thought their action of supporting British as Sedation and even today those who are charged with Sedation are given death sentence. He had similar issues with Coorgis. But just blaming Tipu is nothing but communal bigotry. Even the Mysore Odeyars before Hyder Ali killed Christians. The same Kings killed Lingayats in large numbers too. Why aren't they singled out? If actions, inactions of Kings and Queens are to be judged with the prism of the Constitution, we won't be able to hail even one King or Queen.

Dr.S.Kamath, Mumbai — Please get your facts right and don't fake like Feku Maharaj! For your kind information, the rule of Krishnadevaraya marks a period of much military success in Vijayanagara history. On occasion, the king was known to change battle plans abruptly and turn a losing battle into victory. The first decade of his rule was one of long sieges, conquests, rebellions and victories. His main enemies were the Bahamani Sultans (who, though divided into five small kingdoms, remained a constant threat), the Gajapatis of Odisha, who had been involved in constant conflict since the rule of Saluva Narasimha Deva Raya and the Portuguese, a rising maritime power which controlled much of the sea trade.

As for Chola Raja Rajendra, Rajendra led campaigns from 1002 CE. These include the conquest of the Rashtrakutas and the campaigns against the Western Chalukyas. He conquered the Chalukyan territories of Yedatore (a large part of the Raichur district between the Krishna and the Tungabhadra), Banavasi in the north-west of Mysore and capital Manyakheta. Rajendra erected a Siva temple at Bhatkal. In 1004 CE, he captured Talakad and overthrew the Western Ganga dynasty which had ruled over Mysore for almost 1000 years. He also conquered Kollipakkai, located to the north of Hyderabad in present-day Telangana. An excerpt from an inscription in Tamil from Kolar states: In the 8th year of the reign of Kopparakesarivanmar sri Rajendra Sola Deva, who, while the goddess of Fortune, having become constant, increased, and while the goddess of the great Earth, the goddess of victory in battle and the matchless goddess of Fame, having become his great queens, rejoiced-that in his extended lifetime, conquered with his great war-like army Idaiturai-nadu, Vanavasi shut in by a fence of continuous forests; Kollipakkai, whose walls were surrounded by sulli trees; Mannaikkadakkam whose fortification was unapproachable.

All this wouldn't have been possible without ethnic cleansing!

Not Change, but it will be corrected . A tyrant will be named as tyrant. not Glorifying Tyrants for the sake of votes. Govt should include Tippu in syllybus, but the true story of how he fought the British and his contribution towards islamisation of Mysore Kingdom and Attrocity committed against Kodavas, Melukote Iyengars and Christians. Let children decide if he was a Warrior or Another Tyrant.
